Wet Weather Fails to Stop Bay of Plenty Junior Girls Performances at Kaipara Flats

The Bay of Plenty Junior Girls cricket team returned home from the annual ND tournament held at Kaipara Flats 29/30 November, with a wealth of tournament experience, that will benefit the first-timers in future cricket endeavours.

While wet weather dogged the tournament throughout the three days of scheduled play, all six sides persevered through the inclement conditions, to complete their encounters.

Bay of Plenty Coach Rebecca Yee said “The Kaipara tournament is a good opportunity for our junior girls to begin their Bay of Plenty representative career. It was great to see half the team make their official Bay of Plenty debuts over the weekend. I look forward to seeing the debutants at future representative competitions".

"There were three Rotorua players in our side, which was a result of the great work the Rotorua volunteer coaches has been doing in developing girl’s cricket in their region". "Western Bay of Plenty representation was drawn from Papamoa, Cadets and Mount Maunganui junior cricket clubs"

Bay of Plenty kicked off their tournament assignments with a solid win against Hamilton. The Bay side posted a solid 98 for the loss of two wickets then restricted the Waikato side to 52/8. Brittany Jenkins took four wickets for 10 runs with Freya Lord grabbing three wic

Rachel Wahab posted a personal best of 26 not out against Waikato Valley, which she backed up with 21 retired against Northland, to finish the tournament with 83 runs. Jessica Benge also batted well going up dismissed throughout the tournament.

Brittany Jenkins, was one of the genuine all-rounder’s to emerge from the competition, hitting 53 runs and taking six wickets with best bowling figures of 4/10.

Round One: Bay of Plenty 98/2 (Brittany Jenkins 17, Rachel Wahab 14no) defeated Hamilton 52/8 (Brittany Jenkins 4/10, Freya Lord 3/5)

Round Two: Bay of Plenty 68/3 (Freya Lord 17 retired) lost to Counties Manukau 69/1)

Round Three: Waikato Valley 145 defeated Bay of Plenty 93 (Rachel Wahab 26no)

Round Four: Harbour Development 129/7 (Sadie Stewart 2/16, Jessica Benge 2/20) defeated Bay of Plenty 59/7

Round Five: Bay of Plenty 63/4 (Rachel Wahab 21 retired) lost to Northland 66/0
