Mount Maunganui Day 3 - National Club Chmapionships

Posted: Friday, 7 April 2017

Carrus Mount Maunganui finally got on to the field at Cornwall Park in Auckland, on day three (6 April 2016) of the NZCT National Club Cricket Championships, after the countries violent weather precluded play on the opening two days.

The Northern Districts representatives won the toss against defending titleholders Eastern Suburbs from Wellington and asked their opponents to bat first.

Inclement weather forced players from the field on a number of occasions with the match eventually reduced to 26 over per side. The Wellington team got away to a flyer and were 196 for the loss of six wickets, before the Mount bowlers pegged back their attack.

Eastern Suburbs were eventually dismissed for 239, with three balls to spare, in their allotted overs. Mount captain Dale Swan did plenty of damage with the ball taking four wickets with Peter Drysdale grabbing two bowling scalps.

The Mount Maunganui reply was away to a good start reaching 45 before the first wicket fell. Peter Drysdale went on to post a quickfire 46 off just 24 balls which included three sixes over the boundary ropes.

With just 100 runs on the board for the loss five wickets, the ND representatives were a long way from victory. However the arrival of keeper Matt Golding and Dan Hill at the crease put their side back in the match. When Golding was bowled for a hard fought 46 runs, the Mount tail continued to wag with the Bay side going on to reach 216/9. Dan Hill was there at the end of the valiant Mount Maunganui run chase with an unbeaten 49, with the scorebook showing that the Duckworth Lewis method of determining rain affected matches, saw Mount Maunganui 26 runs short of victory.
