Hawke Cup Defense Starts 27th February

Bay of Plenty will play in their 33rd Hawke Cup Direct Challenge against Counties Manukau at the Puke Domain, kicking off on Saturday 27th January 2018 - since their first Hawke Cup Direct Challenge some eighty-six years ago.

The Bay of Plenty representatives, have experienced a roller-coaster ride since facing South Auckland on the 27-29 February 1932. The Hawke Cup challenge was the first match for the (then) new minor association, after affiliation to the New Zealand Cricket Council the previous year.

South Auckland batted first and posted 333, before bowling Bay of Plenty out twice for scores of 59 and 171, to post an outright victory. Six years later was the low-point in the Bay of Plenty Cricket record book, with the Waikato reaching 263 all out, before humbling the visitors as they bowled Bay of Plenty out for 30 and 22 in their two turns at bat. It would be 48 years and seven further Direct Challenges before Bay of Plenty would win the Hawke Cup. So began an eventful series of Hawke Cup encounters beginning in March 1986, where Bay of Plenty defended the NZ Cricket prize (v Central Otago and Horowhenua). The Bay of Plenty representatives then lost and regained the Hawke Cup, in two successive games with Hawkes Bay, before Southland took the NZ Cricket minor association trophy home in March 1987.

A decade later the Hawke Cup was back in the Bay of Plenty after the Bay First XI snatched the trophy from Auckland/Manukau in March 1987. A high scoring defence against Central Otago, where Simon Winter set the (then) Bay of Plenty highest individual score of 181, rounded out the 1997 Hawke Cup season. The first Direct Challenge of 1998 resulted in Wellington City returning the prestigious cricket prize to New Zealand’s Capital City. It would be another sixteen seasons before the Bay of Plenty golden run of Hawke Cup success began. Since relieving Hamilton of the Hawke Cup in January 2013 the Bay of Plenty First XI have won the Hawke Cup twice and defended it on eight occasions.

The intensity of Hawke Cup competition has seen a myriad of Bay of Plenty all-time individual records set during Hawke Cup play.

The Bay of Plenty Hawke Cup appearance record, is jointly held by Bay of Plenty cricket legend Derek Beard and current skipper Peter Drysdale, with 12 appearances. Most runs belongs to Joe Carter with Tony Gooding streeting his contemporaries with a remarkable 44 wickets.

Last year, Yorkshire Counter batsman Alex Lees who took a cricket sabbatical in the Bay of Plenty during the English winter, blasted the Bay of Plenty highest score when he belted 223 runs, in the first Hawke Cup Direct Challenge of 2017. His innings was a masterful display of batting, producing twenty-two 4’s and one six over the Bay Oval picket fence.
Tony Goodin, is the only Bay of Plenty bowler to grab seven wickets in an innings and ten wickets (or better) in a match, in Hawke Cup encounters. Goodin, took seven wickets for 42 runs against South Canterbury in their first turn at bat, before going on to back it up with five for 91 in their second innings to finish with a twelve wicket haul.
