Hawke Cup vs Northland 23-24 November

There have been few more vital starts to the ND Fergus Hickey Rosebowl competition, for the Craigs Investment Partners Bay of Plenty representative team, than this weekend’s (23/24 November 2019) clash with Northland at Cobham Oval in Whangarei.

The ND Hawke Cup challenger spot is up for grabs, in the calendar year competition, played within the Fergus Hickey title race. Current Hawke Cup holders Hamilton, will face the ND challenger in the first 2020 Hawke Cup Direct Challenge. Entering the last round of the ND Hawke Cup qualifying competition, Bay of Plenty and Waikato Valley are locked together at the top of the qualifying standings on 21 points apiece.

With a maximum eight points up for grabs, there will be plenty of interest in the Bay of Plenty match in the far north. With Waikato Valley sitting out the weekend bye, the Bay side must take some points from the Northland encounter, to book the ND Hawke Cup Direct Challenge position.

The Bay of Plenty side are a mix of solid experience and youth who have earned promotion from the BOPCA Development ranks. Hard hitting top order batsman Stephen Crossan, will be presented with his Bay of Plenty Cricket baggy cap awarded for 25 Bay of Plenty senior representative appearances, in Whangarei.

Long-serving all-rounder Peter Drysdale, is closing in on the magical mark of one hundred Bay of Plenty games and will tick off his 97th Bay appearance at the Cobham Oval. Bay of Plenty Captain Ben Musgrave (48 games) is fast approaching the significant milestone of 50 games in the Bay uniform.

At the other end of the experience spectrum is Josh Earle, who has earned promotion from the Bay Development side that beat Northland last weekend, to make his senior representative debut.
