Carrus Mount Maunganui Finish Fourth In The NZCT National Club Cricket Championships

Posted: Monday, 10 April 2017

Carrus Mount Maunganui, missed grabbing third place in the NZCT Club Cricket Championships by a whisker, on the last day of the tournament on Sunday (9 April 2016).

The National Club Championships have been hosted by the Cornwall Cricket Club in Auckland for over two decades and brings together the best premier sides, from each of the six NZ Cricket Major associations, in head to head combat.

While the first two days of the tournament were abandoned because of torrential rain, Mount Maunganui got through to the playoff for third and fourth place, courtesy of a big win against the Central Districts representatives on the penultimate day of the tournament.

After winning the toss on Sunday morning, Mount Maunganui side elected to bat against Takapuna, with third place in the week long tournament on the line. The Takapuna bowlers quickly warmed to their task and put real pressure on the Northern Districts champions, with Mount Maunganui staring down the barrel of being bowled out for less than a hundred runs, at 84/7.

However ND attack bowler Tony Goodin, batting at nine, changed the match momentum with a gritty unbeaten 44 runs. Goodin put together two more than useful partnerships, with Dale Swan and Kyle Dovey, with Mount Maunganui eventually being dismissed for 167.

Takapuna made a solid start to their target and had reached 40 without loss, before the introduction of Mount skipper Dale Swan, who dramatically changed the momentum of the Takapuna turn at bat. Swan ripped the heart out of Auckland sides top order taking a stunning hat-trick. After the resumption of play after lunch, the momentum swung like a pendulum, before Takapuna got home with a wicket to spare with just four balls remaining.

Mount Maunganui spin bowler Dale Swan, was rewarded for plenty of success with the ball over the four matches that the ND side played, being presented with the Bowler of the Tournament Award.

Mount Maunganui clinched the playoff for third and fourth, with a clinical display on Saturday. Bowling first against CD side United Central, the Mount bowlers controlled the tempo of the match when they removed their opponents for 155. Led by a masterful knock from Bay of Plenty captain Peter Drysdale, who posted an unbeaten 92 runs, Mount Maunganui got home with five wickets to spare. Drysdale’s sterling innings came from just 66 balls and included ten 4’s and three sixes.
