Bay Of Plenty Finish Second In ND Twenty 20 Tournament In Taupo

There is unlikely to have been a more dramatic day in the Bay of Plenty representative cricket eighty-five year history, than Tuesday's (6 December 2017) last two rounds of the inaugural ND Twenty 20 tournament played in Taupo.

Entering the final day, Bay of Plenty were right in the hunt for championship honors, with a three from three winning record - albeit with a one run win over Counties Manukau on day two.

First up in the day three title race was Northland, who has been a thorn in the Bay side, over the last few years. Led by a sterling knock from Henry Cooper, the side from the far north of the country, posted a very respectable 154/7 in their twenty overs. Bay skipper Jono Boult, was the best of his sides bowling attack grabbing three wickets for 15 runs.

The Bay of Plenty batsmen struggled early on against some tight line and length. Sean Davey stepped up to the plate and crafted his way to his side’s top score of 55, with Peter Drysdale batting at seven, contributing a handy 20 runs. With Bay of Plenty, needing five runs of 3 balls, the Northland closer restricted the batsmen at the crease to just three runs to give his side a single run victory.

Another dramatic finish, awaited the Bay of Plenty boys as they squared off with arch-rivals Hamilton, in the final game of the Brian Dunning Trophy competition. Bay of Plenty batted first with Jono Boult anchoring his side’s innings with a hard fought 67. The skipper received solid support from Joe Carter and keeper Tim Clarke, with each reaching 23 before dismissal, as the Bay team posted 151/6.

Hamilton's Peter Bocock top scored with 59 runs as the Waikato City side closed in on the target. Captain Boult, went to fifteen year old Tim Pringle to bowl the last over, with the youngster taking a dramatic wicket and restricting Hamilton to a tie.

Bay of Plenty opened their ND T20 championship campaign, with a reasonable comfortable victory over Waikato Valley, before the drama filled encounter with Counties Manukau. Counties reached 143/8, with Bay of Plenty chasing down the target with a solitary wicket and one ball to spare.

Opening batsman Joe Carter cut loose in spectacular style against Poverty Bay to hammer 122 not out, from just 64 balls. Carter’s assault on the Poverty Bay bowlers included eight 4’s and six 6’s, at an incredible strike rate of 190.63 (per 100 balls).

Carter rewrote two of the Bay of Plenty Cricket records, in the big victory against Poverty Bay - when he blasted Bay of Plenty’s first Twenty 20 century and posted his seventh century behind just Bharat Popli (10 centuries).

A win and a loss by a single run and the dramatic tie with Hamilton, resulted in Bay of Plenty finishing in a highly creditable second place behind the team from the far north. Bay of Plenty team management, gave plenty of praise for the Bay's skipper Jono Boult individual batting and bowling performance and in making decisions on the field, that paid handsome dividends over the five game T20 series in Taupo.
