Brian Dunning Trophy Day 2

Brian Dunning Trophy Day 2

Posted: Tuesday, 5 December 2017

Bay of Plenty will enter the third and final day of the ND twenty 20 tournament being played at Owen Delaney Park this week (3-5 December 2017), with a unbeaten three game winning streak – albeit after beating Counties Manukau,  by a solitary wicket and one ball left in the encounter, in the early action on day two.

Counties Manukau set the Bay boys a solid target, of seven runs a over, when they posted 143/8. Their total was built upon three significant partnership, with the sides top score of 35, reflecting a solid team effort. Sean Davey was the best of the Bays bowlers taking three wickets at a cost of 36 runs.  The Bay of Plenty first wicket fell without a run on the scoreboard. Counties Manukau looked to be in control, when their opponents were 80 for the loss of five wickets. However two gritty knocks from Jono Boult (35) and Ben Musgrave (28) kept the Bay side in contention.

The ninth Bay of Plenty wicket fell at the 134 run mark, with the Bay still needing 10 runs for victory, with their last two batsmen at the crease. Stephen Crossan and Alastair Blackett survived the pressure, to get the Bay team home to a one wicket win with a solitary ball to spare.

There were a lot more smiles in the Bay of Plenty camp, after a batting blitzkrieg against Poverty Bay in the afternoon match. Opening batsman Joe Carter cut loose in spectacular style to hammer 122 not out, from just 64 balls. Carter’s assault on the Poverty Bay bowlers included eight 4’s and six 6’s, at a incredible strike rate of 190.63 (per 100 balls).

Batting at three, Bharat Popli continued the momentum with 44 runs, with Sean Davey posting a unbeaten 38. The Bay batsmen simply blasted the opposition out of the game, reaching 223 for the loss of three wickets. Carter rewrote two of the Bay of Plenty Cricket records, when he blasted Bay of Plenty’s first Twenty 20 century and posted his seventh century behind just Bharat Popli (10 centuries).
Poverty Bay were restricted to 118/8, to give the Bay boys a 115 run victory. Sean Davey returned the best bowling figures of two wickets for 10 runs. Tim Clarke took off the keeping gloves to return 2/14, with Peter Drysdale also grabbing two bowling scalps.

Two significant Bay of Plenty representative marks were reached on Monday, with Joe Carter and Tom MacRury, both playing their 50th games for the Bay of Plenty senior men’s team.
While Bay of Plenty enter the 2017 Brian Dunning Trophy tournament final days play, with a three from three winning record, they face two big challenges against long-time rivals Northland and Hamilton.
