Tauranga Boys College Batsman Blasts Century

A thrilling two run win and a hat-trick from a bowler on debut, gave new Bay of Plenty Cricket Development coach Russell Williams, the perfect start to his time in charge of the Bay of Plenty second eleven.

Facing arch rivals Hamilton at the Tauranga Domain, in the opening round of the Northern Districts Basil McBurney Trophy Development competition, on Sunday (5 November 2017) - the Bay side batted first and posted a competitive target when they reached 206/7 in their allotted fifty overs.

Tauranga Boys College First XI all-rounder Dominic Crombie, who was making his Bay Development debut, top scored with an unbeaten 53 runs. Batting at five, Matt Golding forced the pace along until dismissed for 46. Golding and Crombie produced a 71 run partnership, with Alastair Blackett and Marcel Collett putting on 30 runs in a third wicket stand.

Hamilton got away to a solid start, reaching the 60 run mark without loss after fifteen overs. The introduction of two further debutants in Craig Baldry (1/24) and Tim Pringle (2/35), put the Bay team back in the fight for first round honours. Dominic Crombie, backed up his batting heroics, grabbing a hat-trick that dramatically turned the momentum of the match.

The game went down to the wire, with Hamilton needing six for victory off the last over. A four from the last ball off the contest, wasn't enough, with the Bay side elated to grab a two run win.

Coach Williams said "I was really proud how the youngsters stood up when needed. The team showed a real fighting spirit and it was great to see our young team gel together”. “Dominic and Matt were outstanding with the bat and a concerted bowling and fielding performance got us over the line”.

The real significance of the win against Hamilton, is that it is the first Bay of Plenty victory over their Waikato counterparts since February 2010.

The Bay of Plenty Development side now have a short break, before squaring off with Waikato Valley, in the Western Bay of Plenty on Sunday 19 November 2017.
