Posted: Monday, 1 March 2021

The Versatile Tauranga Williams Cup showdown, between Bond & Co Mount Maunganui and Bayleys Central Indians, was turned on its head by one of the Bay of Plenty representative young guns.

Ben Pomare, went on the attack from the start of the Bay inter-city contest at Blake Park, to smash 167 runs before finally being stumped by the combined teams keeper. Pomare finished  with an impressive strike of 132 (per one hundred balls), with fourteen 4's and seven 6's in his big hundred.

The Mount openers simply took the game away from the visitors with a massive 231 opening stand. Long serving Bay representative Peter Drysdale, was also in good touch with 61 runs, as his team went on to post 312 for the loss of seven wickets.

The six runs plus target proved too big a hurdle for Central Indians, who were bowled out for 190 in the 45th over. Bharat Popli was his sides top scorer with 71, with skipper Stephen Nicholls adding a handy 34 runs.

Former ND professional player, Jono Boult, again showcased his all round skills as Element IMF Cadets cemented their top four spot, with an 89 run win over Holland Beckett Law Tauranga Boys College. Batting at six, Boult belted 85 runs to set Tauranga Boys 220 to win.

Four wickets each, from Boult and another of the Bay of Plenty representative young guns in Tim Pringle, did the damage as the opposition were removed for 130. Charles Williams was the best of the Tauranga Boys batsmen with 33 runs.

A century opening stand took Flying Mullet Te Puke to a big win against Craigs Investment Partners Geyser. Te Puke openers Tai Bridgman-Raison (76) and Stephen Crossan (57) got their side away to a flyer. Blair McKenzie, batting at three, added to the good start with 42 runs, as his side were bowled out for 224.

At 194/3, Te Puke were in control before the Geyser bowlers pegged them back.   Daniel Fisher bowled with enthusiasm to be rewarded with four wickets for 43 runs, with Captain Cody Fell taking a three wicket bag.

Tasman Carsons did plenty of damage with the ball with four wickets as the Rotorua side were removed for 111. The Te Puke victory puts them back in the hunt for a playoffs  spot in three weeks time.

Defending Williams Cup titleholders Eves Realty Greerton took a big step to a coveted home semi-final, when they defeated Papamoa, to sit alone at the top of the standings.

James Boyd’s five wickets, played a big part in Papamoa being removed for 128, with Greerton getting home with seven wickets to spare. Cameron Neal belted a quick fire 62 not out, with Campbell Thomas chipping in with a handy 32 runs.
