Bay of Plenty Coastland Win a Three-Peat of ND Senior Secondary Titles

Posted: Thursday, 24 December 2020

Bay of Plenty Coastland won their third successive ND Senior Secondary cricket title, played in the Bay of Plenty 14-18 December 2020, after they swept aside the challenge from the ND Invitation XI in the championship final.

The Bay of Plenty representatives bowled first in the title decider, removing their opponents for a modest 133. Liam Collett weaved plenty of magic with the ball taking three wickets at a cost of just 12 runs, while Finn O'Brien-O'Loan also took three wickets.

Bay of Plenty Coastland strolled home to an eight wicket win, to lift aloft the Allan Whimp Cup aloft in triumph, for the third successive tournament. Blake Pentecost was in dynamic form with the bat top scoring with 52 not out, with Chris Mascall joining in the charge for victory with 37 runs.

Bay of Plenty Lakeland also had a day in the sun on finals day, in posting a 77 run win against Poverty Bay, in the seventh/eighth place playoff. The Bay side set Poverty Bay a very big target in reaching 256 for the loss of just five wickets. Batting at four, Harry Jones took charge of his teams destiny hammering an unbeaten 105 runs off just 90 balls, in an innings that included ten 4's. Matt Ward was also in good touch with 51 runs to his name.

The Lakeland bowlers took control from the start and removed Poverty Bay for 169, to finish the tournament on a high note.

This seasons tournament posed a number of challenges, most of which were Covid related, and a change of tournament venue from Poverty Bay to Rotorua. An additional challenge was a short notice call-up of two players into the ND Under 19 team, which impacted on Coastland and Lakeland selections and the Bay contributions to the ND Invitation team.

Long-serving Coastland Coach Peter Swan said “The true test of the ND age-group tournaments is to get the players to gel as a team. They all have the skills, but to provide the environment where the players can show off their skills is the job of the coaches and team management". "Coastland success in recent years, means that not only are we growing the young talent but our model of providing guidance to our players is on track"

While the championship trophy is locked away in Bay of Plenty Cricket custody for another twelve months, the Bay side showed their mettle in the semi-final with Counties Manukau. “After a disastrous start against Counties, a rear guard action by Harrison Leach, supported by Rob Ward, saw a modest total of 157 posted".

"With Liam Collett cutting a swath through the Counties batsmen, taking five wickets for 20 runs, Coastland dismissed Counties for just 88 “, said Coach Swan.

The final against the ND Invitation side showed the depth of the Bay of Plenty Cricket age-group pathway.  ”With 17 Bay players involved in the game, this was a match that was filled with mixed emotions" said the Coastland mentor.

The first two days of the tournament were devoted to the Pat Malcon Cup T20 competition. Coastland won three of their four T20 match-ups to finish in third place, with Lakeland finishing sixth of the eight sides.
