Bay of Plenty Coastland Win 2020 ND Junior Secondary Championship

The Bay of Plenty Coastland team won their second ND Junior Secondary Championship title in five years, when they defeated Counties Manukau in the 2020 title decider on Friday 4 December 2020, in Gisborne.

The Bay of Plenty representatives reached a solid 229 for the loss of nine wickets, with Loughlin Keaney top scoring with 63 runs. Captain Logan Murray and Utsav Kumar also made big contributions to the Bay team score.

Counties Manukau were bowled out for 144 to give the Bay side a big 91 run win. Andrew Friskney, shone with the ball in hand taking three wickets at a cost of 22 runs, with Luke Scrimgeour also taking two wickets.

The ND Championship title, saw the Coastland team undefeated in the six games that they contested in Gisborne. The Sam Owen coached sides dominance in the tournament was shown was shown by their winning margins – of three 9 wicket victories, along with 101, 85 and 25 run wins, during their six competition games.

Bay of Plenty Lakeland, had equally fine day out as their Coastland counterparts, taking out the Fifth to Eighth place playoffs. Batting first against hosts Poverty Bay, the Lakeland batsmen set their opponents a target of 213 for victory. Day five belonged to Sean Gapes who top scored with 72 runs, then took four wickets, as Poverty Bay were bowled out for 107.

Lakeland Coach Dean Finlay can be also be well pleased with the performance of his troops in Gisborne, in taking out the minor championship title, with back to back wins on the last two days.

Bay of Plenty Coastland cruised into the championship title decider, against Counties Manukau, with a big win over Northland in the championship semi-final on day four. Batting first the Bay side posted an impressive 229, for the loss of nine wickets, in their allotted fifty overs.

The Coastland bowlers took the game to their opponents from the opening ball, to remove them for 128, to claim a big 101 run win. Individual Coastland honours belonged to Logan Murray with an unbeaten 36 runs and Ethan Chamberlain who took three wickets for 29 runs.

Bay of Plenty Lakeland were involved, in a scarce as hens teeth tied result, which propelled them into the fifth/sixth place playoff against hosts Poverty Bay. Waikato Valley batted first and were bowled out for 186 with Zach Forster taking three wickets.

A run-out with the last ball of the match resulted in the Lakeland side also being removed for 186. Tom Martin was the hero of the Lakeland turn at bat with a gritty 72 runs. Bay of Plenty Lakeland, then went on to win the super over to decide the game result.

The rained-out second day, of the ND 2020 Junior Secondary tournament changed the tournament format on day three. Round three of the T20 competition, was completed on Wednesday morning, with the Championship first round contested over forty overs (per  side) taking place in the afternoon.

Bay of Plenty Coastland and Waikato Valley, finished the T20 round-robin play with three wins apiece, which saw them become joint top seeds for the ND Junior Secondary Championship competition.

The Bay of Plenty Coastland team wasted little time in defeating Poverty Bay in the afternoon 40 over contests. The tournament hosts were bowled out for just 48, with the Coastland side getting home with nine wickets in hand, in the eighth over. Utsav Kumar led the way with an unbeaten 24.

Hamilton set Bay of Plenty Lakeland a very big target, when they were removed with 236 runs in the scorebook. Logan Agnew and Jake Finlay both took two wickets. Lakeland were restricted to 118 for the loss of nine wickets. Zach Forster top scored with 45 runs.

Plate Semi-Final: Waikato Valley 186 (Zach Forster 3/27, Tom Yetsenga 2/26, Liam du Plessis 2/33) tied with Bay of Plenty Lakeland 186 (Tom Martin 72, Ranithu Rodrigo 31) – Bay of Plenty Lakeland won the super over to decide the game result.
