Bay of Plenty Chase Another ND T20 Title at Owen Delany Park in Taupo

Posted: Friday, 4 December 2020

There will be plenty of attention paid to the Craigs Investment Partners Bay of Plenty team, at the annual ND One-Day cricket tournament, to be played at Owen Delany Park in Taupo 6-8 December 2020.

Three seasons ago, Northern Districts Cricket changed the format of the annual tournament in the Great Lake region from one-day cricket to a full round robin T20 Championship. The 2018 T20 tournament resulted in the Bay of Plenty representatives, in defeating the five other ND Minor Association First XI’s, to claim the first ND T20 Championship.

December 2019, saw the Bay side come back from a first-up loss to Northland to finish second to the team from the Far North.

Former Black Cap and ND legend Daniel Flynn is in his first season in charge of the Bay of Plenty senior representative team. The new Bay coach said “We have an exciting group heading to Taupo to contest the Brian Dunning competition. A lot of the guys haven’t played much T20 cricket, so they will be learning as they go and should come away better players for the experience”.

“However there are plenty of match winners in the squad, so if they can win the early games, it will hold us in good stead come the business end of the tournament”.

“Many of the tournament squad were in the team that posted a hard fought win over Northland in November. It was an outstanding learning experience for some of our younger players sharing a dressing room with (Neil) Wagner, (Dean) Brownlie, (Brett) Hampton and (Bharat) Popli”.

Bowler David Hancock, will make his Bay of Plenty senior debut in Taupo after solid form in the Bay of Plenty Cup, where he has taken ten wickets with best figures of 4/31. His recent Bay of Plenty Development debut, saw the Mount Maunganui bowler take out the Counties Manukau danger-man at the top of the innings, to play a big part in the Bay victory.

An experienced core of six of this year’s squad, know about the demands that are required to win the ND T20 silverware, being part of the championship winning side two years ago. Captain Ben Musgrave, along with Peter Drysdale, Stephen Crossan, Iman Singh, Chris Atkinson and Craig Baldry, held the Brian Dunning trophy aloft in victory in December 2018.
