Opportunities for Secondary School players

Otumoetai Cadets Cricket Club are joining an initiative to grow and develop the Western Bay of Plenty Cricket Secondary School competitions.

Based at the Tauranga Domain, Otumoetai Cadets have become one of the heavyweights in Bay of Plenty and Western Bay senior club cricket in the last three decades. Current Black Caps Trent Boult and Corey Anderson are members of the central city cricket club - which is endeavouring to provide a pathway from school cricket to the senior men’s game.

Cadets are looking to enter two to three teams in the WBOPCA Secondary Schools competition, which kicks off in October 2016. Long time Otumoetai Cadets member Grant Manners said “we are aiming to make cricket available for players from schools that don’t have enough players available to field a full school side”.

“Any secondary school youngster that wants to play cricket this season and doesn’t have a school team to play in, will be put in one Cadets secondary schools teams depending on their ability”. “The opportunity to play schools cricket under the Cadets umbrella is also available to youngsters that are home schooled”.

The Cadets secondary school initiative has solid buy-in from the clubs senior players who will be available to assist with coaching during the season. “We aim to provide a pathway at Cadets, from age-group cricket through to premier and representative cricket” said Grant.

There is also the opportunity for parents to become involved in team management and potential coaching, under the Otumoetai Cadets banner. Booking a place in a Cadets secondary school team, is as simply as calling Grant Manners on 027 2989 739 or emailing Grant on grant.manners@gmail.com
