Development Side Win Against Northland

Posted: Monday, 23 November 2015

The Bay of Plenty Development team’s long trip to Whangarei, to square off with their Northland counterparts on Sunday (22 November 2015) produced a solid win.

Arrival in the far north, saw the game transferred from Northland Cricket headquarters at Cobham Oval to Kensington Park, after the weekend rough weather blew the covers off Cobham Oval.

Northland won the toss and asked Bay of Plenty to bat first. Stephan Crossan and Sean Dykes toiled away on a green seaming wicket, with Crossan hitting some lusty blows over the boundary ropes. At 59/3, the Bay of Plenty second XI were struggling somewhat, however a hard hit 49 runs from Cam Neal steadied the ship.

With James Boyd unable to bat because of a finger injury, Bay of Plenty Manager Richie Earl stepped in at number 11. Batting with Brody Gilroy, the pair put on a very valuable 43 runs for the last wicket. Brody Gilroy finished with an unbeaten 22 with Richie Earl posting an undefeated 21 runs. Bay of Plenty finished their turn at bat, with a very respectable 197 for the loss of nine wickets.

Bay of Plenty opening bowlers Chris Atkinson and Brody Gilroy, ripped into their work with the new ball and after ten overs had Northland four down with just 15 runs on the board. The Bay bowlers continued to take regular wickets and removed the home side for 153 in the 35th over.

Chris Atkinson finished the match with impressive figures of 4/22, with Brody Gilroy posting solid figures of three wickets for 45 runs. Gurwinder Singh, Tom Wakelin and Charles Williams, all bowled with genuine enthusiasm to grab a wicket apiece.

The Bay of Plenty Second XI, now wait on the sidelines until 7th February 2016, before they meet Counties Manukau in round three of their chase for the Basil McBurney Trophy.
