Bay Of Plenty Finish Second In Brian Dunning Limited Overs Tournament

Bay of Plenty finished second in the annual Brian Dunning Trophy tournament being played at Owen Delaney Park 4th/6th December 2016,  after being defeated by Counties Manukau on day three.

Counties won the toss and asked Bay of Plenty to bat first in the fifty over per side contest. Ben Musgrave top scored with an unbeaten 51, as his side was bowled out for 193 in the 46th over. Stephen Crossan (26) Brett Hampton (24) and Bharat Popli (20) all got starts, however some tight bowling from Counties, restricted the Bay sides attempts to take charge.

The Bay of Plenty bowlers made a grand start and had their opponents in real trouble, at four down with just 17 runs on the board. Sean Davey and Brett Hampton bowled well with the new ball, however Ash Vodnala upped the ante for Counties to take his side to a four wicket win, with an undefeated 75 runs.

In spite of tasting defeat in the title decider, the Bay of Plenty representatives can be pleased with two victories and a narrow loss in the first two days play. They opened the tournament with a win over Counties in the first of their Twenty 20 games before a narrow loss to Northland in the afternoon T20.

On day two, the Bay side chased down Hamilton’s big total of 255, with four wickets to spare. The two Bay of Plenty stars in the game, were Bharat Popli who belted his tenth century in Bay of Plenty colours, finishing with 118 not out. Young Rotorua bowler Alastair Blackett mesmerized the Waikato side’s batsmen, to grab six wickets for 35 runs.

Bay of Plenty will now prepare to defend the NZ Cricket minor association prize of the Hawke Cup, that they won for the fifth time in March 2016, in the first Hawke Cup Challenge of the season 27/29 January 2017.
