Posted: Thursday, 4 December 2014

Poverty Bay, Hamilton and Northland opened their ND Senior Secondary Schoolgirls tournament campaigns, being played at Ferguson Park in Tauranga, with victories in the first round of T20 contests on Wednesday (3 December 2014).

Hamilton cruised to the easiest win on Wednesday morning, when they bowled Counties Manukau out for just 49. Emma Bakker grabbed three wickets for 6 runs with Samantha Nation returning 2/8. The Hamilton win was a walk in the park as they got home with eight wickets to spare.

Northland won a thriller against defending titleholders and hosts Bay of Plenty. The team from the far north batted first and posted 106/4, with Olivia Lobb in fine touch posting an unbeaten 44. The Bay of Plenty side fell agonisingly short when they finished their allotted overs at 102/4. Tauranga Intermediate youngster Nensi Patel top scored with 29 not out.

Another match to go to the distance was the encounter between Poverty Bay and Waikato Valley. Poverty Bay posted 125/5 then restricted Waikato Valley to 100/6. Nicole Torrie (42) and Lucy McHugh (30no) produced the runs for Poverty Bay, while Kate Russell took 2/18 for the Valley side, with Shaylyn Whetu reaching 30 before dismissal.

Bay of Plenty rebounded from their narrow loss in the morning round to comprehensively defeat Poverty Bay in the afternoon. The Poverty Bay batters posted what looked to be a solid 102/5, with Nicole Torrie again in top form with an unbeaten 44. The Bay of Plenty partnership between Briaana Perry and Holly Topp, simply took the game away from their opponents. Brianna Perry posted 51 not out with Holly Topp reaching 22 before being dismissed, in the Bay of Plenty nine wicket win.

Hamilton left Ferguson Park with an unbeaten record after beating Waikato Valley. The Waikato City side batted first to reach 97/4, with Hannah Bree top scoring with 29. Paige Pretswell was the chief destroyer with the ball for Hamilton taking four wickets for 6 runs, as Waikato Valley were restricted to 74/6.

Northland reached 112/7 against Counties Manukau who then chased down the target for the loss of just three wickets. Olivia Lobb (55no) top scored for Northland with Jayden Tainui returning 4/11 for Counties. The Counties charge for victory was led by Jamie Swale with 35 not out and Maxine Rawnsley with 30 runs.
