BOPCA WOMEN PLACE 3RD AT T20 TOURNAMENT

Posted: Tuesday, 18 October 2022

History was made this weekend down in Hawkes Bay by our 1st XI Women’s team. After all their amazing efforts in preparation and a hard fought weekend playing 4 games, they came away with 3rd place.

A successful tournament started off with an unfortunate loss against North City Cricket Club on Friday. Saturday had a win installed for the team against Havelock North Cricket Club. An opening partnership of 107 after 16 overs from Amiee Unwin and Tessa Hickson sat the Bay side comfortably. While Tash Wakelin and Amelia Harvery came in at 3 and 4 seeing out the end of the innings.

Havelock North came out looking to chase down 140, but were no match for the Bay’s bowlers. Miah Smith ended her spell coming away with 2-11, bowling both victims. Teammates Elle Archer (1-10), Olivia Malone (1-11) and Freya Lord (1-14) added to the fall of wickets for Havelock. Leaving the Bay of Plenty team to gain the first win by 72 runs.

After starting Sunday on a high from Saturday’s win against Havelock North, they continued riding cloud nine, with their second win of the tournament against Upper Hutt United Cricket Club, winning by 8 wickets.

Taking on bowling in the first innings, Kelly Habraken bowled 4 overs during the first change and ended her stint bowling with 4 wickets for only 11 runs. Meanwhile, young Miah Smith (2-8), Brittany Jenkins (2-10) and Elle Archer (1-2) contributed to the success of the bowling figures.

At the change of innings they saw the chance to take the win, chasing 44 runs. Wendy Lee and Amiee Unwin started off strong with a partnership of 28 but after one ball between the first fall of wicket and second, Tash Wakelin and Amelia Harvery were soon out in the middle. Needing 16 runs to close play with a win in Bay of Plenty's favour.

Parnell Cricket Club managed to defeat Bay of Plenty in their final game.

After 20 overs, Parnell had 98 runs with 8 wickets down. Brittany Jenkins (1-24), Elle Archer (1-15) and Sadie Stewart held down steady figures being 2 wickets for 9 runs.

Kelly Habraken (1-15) secured her 5th wicket for the tournament, after bowling her 4 overs.

As the change of innings started, they couldn’t quite manage to chase down 98. The Bay side used all 20 overs, but only secured 86 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Tessa Hickson (24), Tash Wakelin (13) and Kelly Habraken(10) hit double digits. While 21 runs were scored by Amelia Harvey (7), Freya Lord (6), Miah Smith (5), Elle Archer (2*) and Wendy Lee (1). Leaving the total of 18 extras bowled by Parnell.

While the team faced the competition together, there was a little inhouse competition between the team's bowlers. Kelly Habracken (off spinner) walked away with the title of lead wicket taker, with 6 wickets from 16 overs with 3.06 runs, per over average. Young Miah Smith (opening bowler) came a close second with 5 wickets from 15 overs with 3.8 runs, per over average.

Tied third landed in the hands of Elle Archer (off spinner) and Brittany Jenkins (opening bowler) of 4 wickets. Archer ended the tournament with an average of 3.4, after claiming 4 wickets from 12 overs. While Brittany Jenkins took 4 wickets off 14 overs at an average of 4.6 runs per over

Aimee Unwin (opening bat) came away with 65 runs from 4 bats which included a well compiled 50.
