BAYLEYS BAY OF PLENTY CUP ROUND 1 RECAP

The Bayleys Bay of Plenty Cup, with 60/50 over cricket is back in full action this summer.

Although, Lake Taupo Cricket Club enjoyed a bye last weekend. While four premier games were played all over Bay of Plenty. 

 

An hour south, in Rotorua The Flying Mullet Te Puke took on Craigs Investment Partners Geyser City. 

Te Puke saw out the full 60 overs, setting a total of 215. 

Partnership between Hamish Wilde (36) and Blair McKenzie (76) kept the runs flowing with a partnership of 109. Fifty of McKenzie’s runs were scored in boundaries at Ray Boord Park. 

While Cam Riley was dismissed 1 run shy of his half century. 

Josh Earle performed with both bat and ball against Geyser. Scoring a safe 29 runs off 57 balls and claiming the wickets of 6 victims. Bowling 13 overs, 5 maiden overs with only 17 runs scored off his bowling.

After losing the toss, Otumoetai Cadets were put in to bat for the first innings. 

Opening pair Fergus Lellman (45) and Marcell Collett (38) set a steady score. After the fall of 2 wickets coming in at 4, Blayne Faser grafted away earning 57 runs. 

While Cadet’s number 9 and 10, Daniel Anderton (16*) and Joel Griffths (2*) saw out the innings by declaring with a total of 289. 

Bayleys Central Indians came out to bat the second innings chasing down the daunting score of 289. Central's batsmen didn’t seem to struggle collectively hitting twenty nine 4’s and six 6's. 

Central’s closed play after 51.5 overs coming away with 293 runs with 1 wicket in hand.

Mount Maunganui traveled across the bridge on Saturday to face Tauranga Boys at home. Tauranga Boys took the field first after Mount Maunganui won the toss and elected to bat.

Starting the season strong Mount Maunganui came away from the game with max points. After losing a wicket early on in the innings Ben Pomare hit triple digits scoring 108 runs after facing

120 balls. 

No Mount Maunganui players saw a duck, all 11 batsmen contributed to their score of 202.

Tauranga Boy’s, Darcy Collett ended his spell of 14 overs with three wickets next to his name. 

The second innings come to a close left Sam Clode (42*) with an asterisk and 8 runs short of his half century.

Craigs Investment Tauranga Boys College 132/10, 38.4 overs (Sam Clode 42*, Tim Clarke 22, Logan Murray 18; Henry Conway 3/46)

 

Alice Johnson Oval held a convincing win from the Eves Greerton facing home team Papamoa. 

Coming in at number 7 facing 108 balls, Greerton’s Lee Watkins held the highest score last weekend of 110* in the Bay of Plenty Premier grade. Although being 6 runs shy of a century Ben Lind worked hard out in the middle. 

Despite the opening pair from Papamoa only having 1 run on the board. Aaron Barbour (56) and Finn Watson (31) gave Papamoa a glimpse of success. Jared Tutty bowled 4 maiden overs and claimed the wicket of Barbour leaving Watson in the middle. Within 40.3 overs Papamoa were all out for 143 runs.

Papamoa 143/10, 40.3 overs (Aaron Barbour 56, Finn Watson 31; Jared Tutty 3/39)

 

Although Labour Weekend is this weekend, cricket doesn’t stop, games are still played all over the bay. Otumoetai Cadets enjoy the long weekend this week with a bye. 

Despite the results of last weekend Geyser City, Tauranga Boys, Papamoa will be aiming to hit double digits on the standings table. While Lake Taupo will be looking to get points to put them on the board. 

Te Puke, Greerton and Mount Maunganui will be fighting it out to stay on top of Central Indians on the leaderboard.
