VERSATILE TAURANGA WILLIAMS CUP ROUND 7

Posted: Tuesday, 1 March 2022

Holland Beckett Law Tauranga Boys were looking to keep their semi final hopes alive as they came up against Papamoa.

Bowling first on a good wicket, it was a tough ask to limit scoring and take wickets for Tauranga Boys. Papamoa got off to a great start with a 45 run opening partnership between Nitin Bindal and Xavier Lea but the cracks started to appear once Tauranga turned to their spinners and Papamoa went from 108/3 to 129 all out.

Needing quick wickets, Papamoa struck early - dismissing Charles Williams in the 3rd over. Any hopes of bowling Tauranga Boys out were quickly diminished with only one additional wicket falling as Tauranga chased down the total with ease in the 27th over.

Papamoa 129/10, 41.5 overs (Xavier Lea 37, Nikhil Vishwanath 31; Charles Williams 4/24)
Tauranga Boys College 134/2, 26.2 overs (Tim Clarke 56*, Billy Syme 32*; Ben Goodall 1/11)
Tauranga Boys College won by 8 wickets

The top of the table clash between the Bayleys Central Indians and Element IMF Otumoetai Cadets did not disappoint.

After winning the toss and deciding to bat first on a hot Rotorua day, the home side got off to a good start, putting 25 on the board before their first wicket fell. A 74 run partnership between Anish Desai and Stepen Nicholls put the Central Indians in the box seat, but quick wickets at the end of the innings saw Central leave a few runs out on the park as they were bowled out in the 49th over for 201.

Cadets opener, Mayura Galapaththi was in fine form at the top of the order scoring 58 runs at better than a run a ball with 9 boundaries. His innings set the tone for the run chase. Blayne Fraser was the man to top score and see Cadets over the line score an unbeaten 77 to go with his 45 not out last week in the win over Greerton.

Bayleys Central Indians 201/10, 48.2 overs (Anish Desai 60, Stephen Nicholls 49; Tim Pringle 3/37)
Element IMF Otumoetai Cadets 205/5, 46.3 overs (Blayne Fraser 77*, Mayura Galappaththi 58; Parv Metha 2/34)
Element IMF Otumoetai Cadets won by 5 wickets

Winning the toss and bowling first, Generation Homes Lake Taupo's plan for early wickets did not  come to fruition as Mount Maunganui put on a 81 run opening stand.

Michael Mitchell made the breakthrough for Taupo, dismissing Niven Dovey for 35 in the 17th over but with Pete Drysdale continuing his fine form with a brilliant 129 not out off 141 balls, Mount Maunganui cruised to 281 in their 50 overs.

Lake Taupo started well but found themselves 6 down with 114 on the board. Mitchell tried to keep his team in the game with a solid 44 off 93 but they couldn't match the marlins run rate, falling 80 runs short.

Bond & Co Mount Maunganui 281/7, 50 overs (Pete Drysdale 129*, Niven Dovey 35; Michael Mitchell 2/17)
Generation Homes Lake Taupo 201/9, 49 overs (Michael Mitchell 44*, Shaun Davies 39; Gus Tustin 3/30)
Bond & Co Mount Maunganui won by 80 runs

It was a low scoring affair in Te Puke as the Craigs Investment Partners Geyser City decided to have a bat first.

Opener Vinay Pathania showed his intent with a 4 off the first ball of the innings and proceeded to whack another four 4s and a six in his short stint at the crease. That is where the excitement came to an end as wickets fell consistently and runs were hard to come by due to some excellent bowling from Te Puke.

Mikaere Leef was on fire with the ball, cleaning up the tail and ending his spell with 4/12 at an average of 3 and economy rate of 2.06.

Needing 115, The Flying Mullet Te Puke didn't waste any time as opening batsman Ben Vyver putting on 51 off 39 balls - including four 6s. With support from Blair McKenzie (32*) and Iman Nahal (18*), Te Puke comfortably chased down Geyser City's total in the 18th over.

Craigs Investment Partners Geyser City 114/10, 31.5 overs (Vinay Pathania 28, Dilraj Singh Gill 22; Mikaere Leef 4/12)
The Flying Mullet Te Puke 115/2, 17.3 overs (Ben Vyver 51, Blair McKenzie 32*; Supreet Singh 1/12)
The Flying Mullet Te Puke won by 8 wickets
