Posted: Friday, 8 January 2021

The Covid 19 epidemic, provided a little upside for a number of rising cricket stars who were called into New Zealand representative action during the first half of the current season.

Both West Indies and Pakistan arrived in the country with large extended squads, due to the formalities of fourteen days quarantine for any replacement players. With both sides carrying a solid number of fringe first team players, NZC took the opportunity to arrange matches, between both West Indies and Pakistan A sides, against New Zealand selections.

A battled hardened Bay of Plenty professional batsman, and two Bay young men with considerable potential, squared off in combat with the visitors second team selections.

A two game series between West Indies and New Zealand A, saw a run-fest at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui in early December 2020. Two New Zealand centuries from Glen Phillips and Tim Seifert, propelled the home side 574, to defeat the visitors by an innings and 143 runs. Bay of Plenty ND representative Joe Carter got amongst the run scoring before being dismissed for 35.

Carter backed up two weeks later against Pakistan A at the Cobham Oval in Whangarei, where he scored a solitary run in his first turn at bat, before showing some form in the home sides second innings to post 30 runs.

Two New Zealand XI T20 games on the 3rd and 5th January, at Lincoln, featured Joe Carter and two youthful Bay of Plenty representatives in Tim Pringle and Fergus Lellman. While both Pringle and Lellman earned New Zealand Under 19 selection last season, there New Zealand XI participation was a huge step up international competition for the two Bay young men.

Pakistan took out first encounter, with all three Bay players getting some runs on the board, with Tim Pringle also taking a wicket.

Joe Carter showed his absolute class in the second T20 match, where the home side posted 181/5 and then removed their opponents for 161, to claim a hard fought 20 run victory. The ND professional batsman was in blazing form with his willow weapon, smacking an unbeaten 81 from just 52 balls, which included nine 4's and two big shots over the boundary.

Tim Pringle took another senior international wicket returning figures of one wicket for 33 runs, with Fergus Lellman sitting out the action on the sideline.
