Bay of Plenty Defeat Arch-Rivals Hamilton on First Innings Points

Posted: Tuesday, 26 January 2021

There is no better feeling for Bay of Plenty representative sides than walking from the field of play having soundly defeated a Hamilton team.

The Bay of Plenty Senior Men's side returned home on Sunday (24 January 2021) after having administered Waikato Capital City's first eleven, a 59 run first innings defeat, in two days of ND Fergus Hickey Rosebowl cricket.

Bay of Plenty Coach Daniel Flynn said “It was an outstanding hard fought win. The Bay side was extremely well lead by Ben Pomare, who stamped his mark on the side in his first Fergus Hickey game in charge".

Bay of Plenty batted first and were 307 for the loss of eight wickets at stumps on day one. Taylor Bettelheim, was patience personified, in belting 133 of 269 balls, which included nine 4's. The Bay opener's century was his third in just twelve Bay of Plenty representative matches.

"Taylor's innings was excellent. Having been put in, Peter Drysdale and Taylor, negotiated the first hour in bowler friendly conditions, which set us up for a decent total. He played positively throughout his time in the middle which put the pressure back on the Hamilton bowlers".

Bay of Plenty continued with their attacking game, early on day two, before being dismissed for 319. Skipper Ben Pomare, was there at the conclusion of the Bay of Plenty innings with an unbeaten 34, with Joe Carter contributing a useful 31 runs.

Hamilton made a solid start and were up with the required run rate for much of their innings, with their number three Sajith Dhambagolla, posting their sides top score of 73 runs. Tim Pringle worked his magic with the ball, and was rewarded with six wickets at a cost of 48 runs, as Hamilton were removed for 260.

"Tim has been getting better and better all season, so it was only a matter of time, before he got the rewards of a six wicket bag". "The rest of the bowling attack all played their part, in particular Craig Baldry who bowled a lot of tough overs into a strong wind, which allowed Tim to attack downwind".

"You always know Hamilton are going to be tough opponents, so it was nice to see the guys get a win" said the Bay of Plenty Coach. "However there are still a lot of things we can improve on individually and collectively. I'm sure that the boys are looking forward to our next outing (against Waikato Valley) where we have the chance to keep building".
