Two Craigs Investment Partners Bay of Plenty Representative Teams to play Hawkes Bay

Posted: Friday, 15 January 2021

Two Bay of Plenty representative teams face a big challenge on Sunday (17 January 2021), when they square off with their Hawkes Bay counterparts, at Owen Delany Park in Taupo.

The two NZC Minor Associations have engaged in inter-provincial combat in recent seasons, but this weekends encounters have been ratcheted up another level, with the Bay of Plenty Senior Men's and Development teams playing alongside each other at the picturesque Taupo cricket venue.

The BOPCA Senior Men’s side will have an added incentive for success with the Howell Family Trophy on the line. Former NZC National Coaching Director John Howell, had strong connections with both Hawkes Bay and Bay of Plenty, while John's son in former Black Cap Llorne Howell played for both provinces.

Bay of Plenty has responded to the challenge of the Howell Family Trophy being put up for grabs, by naming an extremely strong line-up.

Northern Knights batsmen Bharat Popli and Dean Brownlie will lead a strong batting line-up, which includes 111 game Bay of Plenty veteran Peter Drysdale, young guns Fergus Lellman and Taylor Bettelheim and Blair McKenzie. The Bay side will field a team of young bowlers in Tim Pringle, Dominic Crombie, Cameron Riley, Josh Earle and Craig Baldry, who will be the nucleus of the Bay sides in the future.

In a further nod to the future, New Zealand Under 19 wicket keeper Ben Pomare will captain the team for the first time.

A equally strong Bay of Plenty Development team will take to the field in the Great Lake region.  Another of the Bay of Plenty rising stars in Niven Dovey will lead the side, with several players having Bay of Plenty first eleven experience. Baywide cricket form has also been rewarded, with Greerton keeper Brandan Laurenzi and Tauranga Boys College bowler Liam Collett making their Bay of Plenty Development debuts.
