The Bay of Plenty Development established themselves as the best second eleven side, in Northern Districts Cricket, when won the Basil McBurney Trophy during the course of the 2018/19 representative season.

Bay Development Head Coach Russell Williams said “I am very pleased with the season, the guys really stood up and showed how much they learnt last year as a group and did a great job this season”.

“Everyone in our squad had strong roles within our team and they executed at crucial times, which was great to see, the belief and drive within this young squad is so strong and very exciting. I can't say enough about this team”.

“Winning the title was awesome and great reward for the lads, but seeing them come together time and time again when games where in the balance and getting the job done for each other, was massive for our group moving forward”.

The Bay of Plenty boys had to dig deep in their first Basil McBurney game of the season and overcome a heartbreaking three-run loss, to Poverty Bay in Gisborne. The home side batted first and set Bay of Plenty a substantial target reaching 239 for the loss of nine wickets. Craig Baldry was the best of the Bay's bowling attack taking three wickets for 28 runs.

Jacob Logan made an auspicious Bay Development debut top scoring with 72 runs, as Bay of Plenty were bowled out for 236, just three runs short of their target. Marcel Collett was also in good touch posting a half century.

The Bay Development representatives repeated last year’s defeat of arch-rivals Hamilton at Galloway Park on Sunday 3 February 2019, in a replay of the washed out Basil McBurney Trophy encounter, originally scheduled for December 2018.

Hamilton won the toss and elected to bat, which looked to be a wise decision, with the openers putting on an opening stand of 120. Bay of Plenty spinner Mikaere Leef made significant inroads, taking four wickets, with Marcel Collett chiming in with two bowling scalps as the home side were bowled out for 245.

The Bay of Plenty opening pair made a determined start to the big target, with Taylor Bettleheim the first to go from a smart slip catch. Fergus Lellman continued on to be rewarded with his sides top score of 66 runs and produced a solid partnership with skipper Blair McKenzie, who reached 29 before dismissal.

Bay number five Jacob Logan, carried on the required run chase of five an over, before being caught for 31. Hard hitting Daniel Price (49) further increased the run rate and took the game deep, before two Bay Development debutants in Niven Dovey (19) and Dillon Preston (10) kept their nerve, to help the young Bay side get home with three wickets in hand and just a few balls to spare

A third successive victory in four weeks, came when they defeated Northland, at the neutral venue at War Memorial Park in Manurewa on Sunday 10 February 2019.

The team from the Far North won the toss and asked Bay of Plenty to bat first, with the Bay side getting away to a flyer, before Fergus Lellman was dismissed for 24 at the 60 run mark. Fellow opener Jacob Logan continued his side’s momentum, reaching 45 before being dismissed.

Batting at five, Tim Pringle stroked the ball around War Memorial Park ground to go on and finish with his sides top score of 48 off 76 balls. Dominic Crombie posted a solid 37 with Niven Dovey posting 26 runs at a run a ball. Bay of Plenty were bowled out for 242, with three balls remaining in their turn at bat.

Success with the ball played a big part of Bay of Plenty Development 2018/19 campaign success, with the Bay second eleven bowlers removing Northland for 229, to claim a 13 run win. Removing three Northland danger men in the thirties slowed their opponent’s momentum.  Fergus  Lellman took four wickets for 38 runs, including the vital last two wickets, when their opponents were getting uncomfortably close to their target.

The Bay of Plenty Second eleven, grabbed their fourth straight win in 2019 when they defeated Waikato Valley by seven wickets, at St Paul’s Collegiate in Hamilton on Sunday 24 February 2019.Waikato Valley won the toss in the Basil McBurney Trophy match and backed themselves to set a competitive total, by sending the opposition into the field.

Led by three top order wickets from Niven Dovey, the Bay bowlers quickly had the Valley side on the back foot, with six down and 79 runs on the board. At 116/8, the Valley end seemed to be in sight, until Tiger Houston and Cameron Parsons came together. The pair defied the Bay bowlers attempt to bowl the Valley out, putting on a unbeaten 9th wicket stand of 101, with Houston finishing two short of a century.

Waikato Valley had set the Bay visitors what looked to be a solid challenge, when they finished their turn at bat, at 217 for the loss of eight wickets. Fergus Lellman and Daniel Price, backed up Niven Dovey's bowling heroics with two wickets apiece.

Two of the Bay of Plenty Development young guns in Fergus Lellman and Taylor Bettelheim, simply blasted the game away from Waikato Valley. The pair put on an opening stand of 192, before Taylor fell on 77. Fergus carried on to finish with a century to his name, with 110 runs coming from 99 balls, which contained fourteen 4’s and three big shots over the boundary. The Bay of Plenty victory came with one ball remaining in the 35th over, with seven wickets to spare.

Two further individual Bay of Plenty Development team performances, which stepped up in the face of adversity, took the Bay second eleven to victory in their final ND Development game of the season, against Counties Manukau – and the 2018/19 ND Development title.

Bay of Plenty took first use of the batting strip at the Bay Oval, with the opposition bowlers having early reward, with the home side at five down for 63 runs. The arrival of Ben Pomare changed the momentum of the game, as he took control, to hammer 114 runs at a tad less than a run a ball.

Pomare put on two game winning partnerships, of 48 runs with Niven Dovey (25) and then a further 49 runs, with Bay number nine Dillon Preston (23). When Pomare was dismissed with the last ball of the Bay of Plenty turn at bat, the Bay had been dismissed for 258.

Counties made a scintillating start to the reply and were 65 without loss. Bay of Plenty first change bowler Tim Pringle then entered the fray, to rip out the Counties top three for just three runs, to have the Bay team well and truly back in the match.

Pringle went on to remove the Counties middle order, to finish with the outstanding figures of seven wickets at a cost of 25 runs, as Counties Manukau were rolled for 122, to hand Bay of Plenty a 136 run win.
