Tough Loss v Green Island (Otago)

Eves Realty Greerton roared backed from their ten wicket loss on the opening day of the National Club Championships, to blast nearly 350 runs in their turn at bat against Green Island, on day two. However they were forced to watch, as Christi Viljoen smashed a six over the boundary with six balls to spare, as the Otago side got home to what had earlier seemed an unlikely victory.

The Bay of Plenty side backed themselves, after the previous day’s dismal batting performance, going into bat after winning the toss. Greerton opener Nick Hendrie smashed 45 off 26 balls with Henry Collier continuing on to belt 77 runs. Brett Hampton blasted a quick-fire 68, with Lee Watkins batting at six, belting 77 runs before dismissed. The ND representatives, were bowled out with a massive 349 runs on the board, in an innings where fifteen 6’s sailed over the boundary ropes.

The Green Island opening batsmen strode to the wicket full of self-belief. The Greerton bowlers, who were equally confident, grabbed their first wicket with just 34 runs on the board. Two top order centuries from BS Wilson (118) and AJ Harris (110) kept the South Island sides run rate on track during their massive 208 run partnership.

The Greerton bowlers struck back with two quick wickets in the 37th over, however Otago representative player Christi Viljoen belted an unbeaten 64 off just 33 balls, to take his team to back to back 2019 National Championship victories
