Eves Realty Greerton Have a Tough Day at the Office at National Club Championships

Team Faces Otago Reps, Green Island, Today

It was a tough day at the office for the Greerton premiers, on the opening day’s play of the National Club Championships, being held at Cornwall Park in Auckland 2-7 April 2019.

Central Districts representatives Napier Tech Old Boys grabbed the early advantage, after winning the toss and asking the Northern Districts champions to bat first, on a pitch that looked to have plenty of assistance for the bowlers.

Greerton made a circumspect start losing their first wicket for 16 in the sixth over. The removal of key striker Brett Hampton for one run was a major bonus for the CD side. At the first drinks break after 25 overs, Greerton were in real trouble, at 62 for the loss of five wickets. Napier Tech keeper Matt Edmondson took four of the first five Greerton dismissals behind the stumps.

A small show of defiance from Lee Watkins, who top scored with 18 runs wasn’t enough, as the Bay of Plenty team was bundled out for 71 in the 31st over. Former Otumoetai Cadets bowler Morton Freer did plenty of damage for Napier Tech, with four wickets at a cost of just 11 runs.

Napier Tech took little time bringing up the required runs, on a wicket that had dried out considerably from the match start, with the CD sides win coming with the second ball of the 7th over.

Redemption will be on the Greerton agenda on day two when they square off with Green Island. However they face another stiff challenge, as the Otago champions demolished Parnell (Auckland) by 185 runs on day one.
