Geyser City Sports And Mount Maunganui To Fight Out 2018 McNaughton Trophy

An intercity battle will decide the 2018 McNaughton Trophy, after Rotorua’s Geyser Sports and Mount Maunganui won their respective semi-finals on Sunday 25th February 2018.

The origins of the Baywide Reserve Grade prize, come from the donation by the McNaughton Family in Te Puke, of a trophy for competition between second tier teams from the Tauranga and Te Puke sub-associations. A number of years ago, the competition was expanded to include all Reserve and B Grade sides in Bay of Plenty cricket and is effectively the Baywide Reserve Grade Championship.

Defending McNaughton Trophy titleholder R&A Sangha, batted first against Geyser City and were removed for 162, with Vikas Mohan top scoring with a half century. Jono Collier weaved some magic with the ball to remove three Sangha batsmen at a cost of just 27 runs.

Geyser City wasted no time in putting runs on the board and had posted 39 runs when their first wicket fell in the seventh over. Kane Vanner joined Liam Kelly in the middle, with the pair putting on a second wicket partnership of 79 runs, before Vanner was dismissed for 36.

Liam Kelly, then proceeded to take his team his team through to victory, as three wickets fell at the other end for successive ducks. Kelly (83no) and Cameron Ingram put together winning stand of 44, with the Rotorua opener taking control to steer his team to the 2018 McNaughton Trophy final.

The semi-final between multiple McNaughton Trophy winners Mount Maunganui and Katikati, was a short and sharp encounter. Katikati batted first and were skittled for 84, with team stalwart Ben Warren top scoring with 28 runs. Dominic Radich bowled with real enthusiasm to take four wickets at a cost of just 8 runs.

Mount Maunganui had little trouble locking in a berth in the 2018 McNaughton title decider, with Jason Luke leading the way with an unbeaten 29, in his teams seven wicket win.
