Bay Of Plenty Development Hit The Road To Poverty Bay

The Bay of Plenty Development team, will have another long trip on the road this weekend, after a heartbreaking loss to Northland in Whangarei last Sunday (25 February 2018).

This Sunday (4 March 2018) the Bay of Plenty Second XI play Poverty Bay, in a match, that has been rescheduled from their rained out encounter on 25th February 2018.

The Bay team has two new players from the team that travelled to the far north last weekend. Te Puke youngster Daniel Price will make his Bay of Plenty senior representative debut, while Cadets Gurwinder Singh who is returning from injury, will come back into the Bay Development ranks.

With two games to play in the current Basil McBurney Trophy competition, the Bay of Plenty side enters the Poverty Bay encounter with a one win – two loss season record. Success in Gisborne and in their last match with Counties Manukau, could give the Bay side a chance of a top two finish.

Last Sunday, Northland batted first at Cobham Oval and were bowled out for 229, with four balls remaining in their turn at bat. Dominic Crombie and Brody Gilroy both captured three wicket bags, while Cam Riley bowled economically to take two wickets at a cost of 26 runs.

Stephen Crossan, who has earned promotion to Bay of Plenty Fergus Hickey Rosebowl team for this weekends match with Waikato Valley, was in sublime touch opening the Bay of Plenty reply with Fergus Lellman. The Bay opening pair put on an 85 run opening stand, with Crossan going on post his side top score of 78 at a tick over a run a ball.

Bay Development wicket-keeper Ben Pomare continued his sides momentum and was rewarded with 48 runs to his name. When the Bay keeper was dismissed, the Bay side seemed in charge at 198/6.

However, the Northland bowlers dug deep to remove their opponents lower order batsmen for 27 runs, to give their side a paper-thin margin of a four run victory.
