Bay Of Plenty To Start Their ND Development Title Defence On Sunday

Bay of Plenty will start their defence of the Basil McBurney Trophy, which is awarded to the winners of the ND Development competition, when they meet long-time rivals Hamilton at the Tauranga Domain on Sunday (5 November 2017).

The Bay of Plenty second eleven will see Russell Williams mentoring the Bay of Plenty representatives for the first time. Development Manager Shaun Riley is also new to the management role, with the new Coach and Manager expected to bring their different skill-sets, to successfully guide the team throughout the season.

A philosophy adopted by the Bay of Plenty Cricket selectors, of several battle hardened representative players, interspersed with the best rising young cricket talent - has again been a focus of the Development team to play Hamilton.

Bay Development Captain Stephen Crossan and keeper Matt Golding, have both played for the Bay of Plenty Senior Men’s team and know about the realities of stepping up to senior representative cricket.
At the other end of the representative spectrum, Dominic Crombie, Tim Pringle, Marcel Collett, Craig Baldry and Josh Earle are all Western Bay of Plenty secondary school students and all five are making their Development team debuts at the Tauranga Domain.

The biggest challenge of the Basil McBurney Trophy for the Bay side is always provided by Hamilton. Last season the Waikato City side chased down 212 runs, posted by the Bay of Plenty batsmen, with eight wickets to spare. However the Hamilton loss was the Bay sides only stain of defeat during the ND Development title race, with the Bay boys squeezing home by a solitary point from Northland, to take out the ND Development prize.
