New Baywide Cricket format

A new Baywide Premier format is being introduced for the BOPCA 2017/18 cricket season, which will see the re-introduction of the Baywide T20 competition.

Bay of Plenty Cricket Manager Tai Bridgman-Raison said “The feedback from the premier captains was for a closer alignment between the Baywide Cup and the National Club Championship”. “The captains were also unanimous in their to desire prepare for the Baywide Cup, with T20 cricket in early October, when cricket is usually played on artificial wickets. With the winner of the Baywide Cup representing Bay of Plenty in the ND National Club Champs qualifying playoffs, the Baywide Cup in essence has become a eight game shootout, with the winner reaping the reward of a ND Club Champs berth.

Two days of T20 cricket will open the new season on the 7th and 14th October 2017. After a Labour weekend break, the Baywide Cup will kick off on the 28th October with the Final played on the 16th December.
The second half of the T20 title race, takes place on the 13th and 20th January 2018, before the time-honored Williams Cup focuses on the most prestigious piece of Bay of Plenty Cricket silverware.

The Baywide Premier T20 was introduced six seasons ago, with Tauranga Boys College winning the first two T20 championships. Tauranga Boys cruised to a 95 run victory over Rotorua Central in 2012, before accounting for Otumoetai Cadets in 2013.

Rotorua Central went back to back in 2014 and 2015, defeating Mount Maunganui and Otumoetai Cadets respectively, with Cadets chasing down Central’s total of 104/8 for the loss of just two wickets during 2016. Due to a congested cricket calendar last season, the T20 championship was put on hold until re-introduced this season.
