Bay Of Plenty Twilight Cricket Players Dusting Off The Cobwebs

Where to Play

The arrival of daylight saving in New Zealand, heralds a multitude of social cricket players dusting cobwebs off bat, balls and pads as twilight cricket takes centre stage for many in the Bay of Plenty.

New Zealand Cricket reported 170,000 plus registered players in the 2015/16 season, however anecdotal evidence suggests that many more casual players turn out for social and twilight cricket each summer.

Bay of Plenty Cricket manager Tai Bridgman-Raison said “The popularity of twilight cricket leagues reflect what people are increasingly looking for from their sporting experience – a limited time commitment, maximum involvement and an enjoyable social experience.”

One of the longest running twilight cricket competitions in the Bay of Plenty, is staged each summer by the Te Puna Rugby Club, at Maramatanga Park on the Tauranga City doorstep. Te Puna twilight cricket kicked off thirty-three years ago and is both a fund-raiser for the rugby club and a highly popular Thursday night social cricket meeting-place.

Two other long standing Western Bay of Plenty social competitions, are facilitated by the Mount Maunganui and Te Puke Cricket Clubs at  Blake Park and the Te Puke Domain (and other venues) respectively.

Taupo social cricketers are catered for with Wednesday night hit-outs at Owen Delaney Park, with the Eastern Bay of Plenty twilight games also played on Wednesday evenings at various artificial wickets around Whakatane.
