Bay Oval To Again Host The Northern Provincal League

The exciting new concept in women’s cricket returns to the Bay Oval at Mount Maunganui on Sunday (22 January 2017) with two further games in the SKYCITY Hamilton Northern Premier League (NPL). A number of White Ferns will join many of the best emerging talent in the country, to again showcase their skills on the Mount Maunganui grounds.

The new NPL initiative sees four (non-regional) women’s teams competing across six Sundays during the season. A draft has been instituted to ensure that that the talent is evenly spread through the four sides.

Cricket Manager at Bay of Plenty Cricket Tai Bridgman-Raison said “The latest round of the NPL at the Bay Oval, is a great lead-in for an exciting women’s cricket schedule in the Bay of Plenty, over the next couple of months.  The White Ferns play Australia Women in early March, at the Bay Oval, which will feature some of the best Women’s players in the world”.

“We also have grassroots initiatives such as the local Junior NPL starting early March”. “The GoGirl introduction program kicks off again in Term One with the Rainbow Cup Festival Day at the Bay Oval on the 15th March 2017”.

Entering the fourth round of the NPL, the Power has an unbeaten record with three straight victories from Sonic and Velocity with Galaxy tailing the field. The two NPL encounters on Sunday, sees competition leaders Power squaring off with Velocity and Galaxy meeting Sonic.

There is plenty of local interest in the two NPL games on Sunday, with Western Bay players in Sam Curtis, Kate Anderson, Nensi Patel and Briana Perry spread through the four sides. In addition White Fern Anna Peterson, who learnt the game while residing in the Western Bay of Plenty, will also be in action.

Cricket fans at the NPL at the Bay Oval, can expect plenty of big shots over the boundary ropes and bowlers taking plenty of wickets in non-stop action. Two players to keep an eye out for, are Velocity’s Sara McGlashan who smashed the competition top score so far of 98, while Anna Peterson from the Sonic has taken a four wicket bag at a cost of just 8 runs.
