Two wins for Both Coastland and Lakeland on Day 1

The two Bay of Plenty representative teams, at the ND Senior Secondary Cricket tournament being played in Gisborne this week (12/16 December 2016) can be well pleased to their starts in the five-day annual age-group competition.

First up on day one, were two rounds of T20 cricket which put the heat on the two Bay sides from the start. Bay of Plenty Coastland who are seeking to go one better than last year’s second place, met Northland in the morning round of the T20 encounters.

Northland won the toss and asked Coastlands to bat first. Led by a hard fought 41, at a run a ball from Blair McKenzie, the Bay team reached 119/9 in their allotted overs. The team from the far north took up the challenge and were in contention, before the Coastland bowlers tightened the screws to restrict them to 105/7. Cameron Riley grabbed three wickets for 14 with leggie Iman Singh spinning his way to 3/15.

The Lakeland side, also got their ND tournament campaign off to a winning start, with a victory over the ND Invitation side.  All the Lakeland bowlers were in the action, as the ND Invitation team were bowled out for 91. An unbeaten 40 from Dilan Nanayakkara and 34 runs by Chris Tupaea took their side to an easy eight wicket victory.

Lakeland, were in solid form in their afternoon T20 match with Poverty Bay, after restricting them to 110 for the loss of seven wickets. Chris Tupaea and Dilan Nanayakkara both bowled economically to take two wickets apiece. Dilan Nanayakkara backed up his bowling performance with his sides top score of 49, with Ryan Neeves contributing a handy 28 runs, as the Lakeland team cruised to a six wicket win.

Coastland set Counties Manukau a large target when they reached 159/3 in their second T20 game. Sean Wakelin took the game by the scruff of the neck to blast 49 off just 28 balls. Blair McKenzie, continued the momentum to finish with an unbeaten 44, with Andrew Randrup contributing 28 not out.

The Coastland bowlers controlled the second half of the match, from the opening ball, to severely limit their opponent’s attempts to hit out. Cam Riley finished his spell with three wickets at a cost of just 5 runs, while Mount Maunganui premier player Luke Tatley also took three wickets, as Counties Manukau finished their turn at bat stranded on 98/9.

Day two (13 December) action, turns to fifty over per side encounters, with Coastland squaring off with Waikato Valley in Pool A while Lakeland will play Hamilton in Pool B.
