ND Secondary Girls

Hamilton, won the ND Secondary Schoolgirls cricket tournament being played in Tauranga this week, defeating Waikato Valley in a real nail-biter, that went down to the last ball in the thirty over per team game. 

The two Waikato teams squared off in round five on the final day’s play, after both contenders won their first three games, beating Poverty Bay, Bay of Plenty and Northland respectively.

The Waikato city team had first use of the batting strip and posted a very solid total of 156 for the loss of three wickets. Amy Smith top scored with a hard fought 73, while Samara Clare made a solid contribution of 41 not out.

Waikato came out to face the big target full of determination and were right in the match, with Quinn Robinson top scoring with a gritty 65. The departure of Quinn Robinson turned the momentum in the encounter and the Waikato country side needed four off the last ball for victory. The match finished with Waikato Valley stranded on 153/5, which handed Hamilton the Louise Milliken Cup.

Waikato Valleys Quinn Robinson was presented with the batting trophy with 178 runs, Phoebe Taylor from Poverty Bay was awarded the bowling trophy taking 11 wickets, while the MVP was given to Amy Smith from the victorious Hamilton side.

In the other day three match-up, Bay of Plenty were bowled out for 54 with Northland reaching the target with seven wickets to spare.
