Coastland take Senior Secondary Title

Bay of Plenty Coastland took out the 2016 ND Senior Secondary tournament in Gisborne, for the third time in five years, when they dominated the title decider against Hamilton to win by ten wickets.

Coastland Coach Peter Swan said “We came back from some pressure in the Hamilton sides second innings to be chasing 92 runs for the tournament championship. Andrew Randrup and Sean Dykes took control in our second turn at bat and simply took the game away from the opposition”.

Bay of Plenty Coastland, met Hamilton for the second year in a row in the two-day championship final. The Bay of Plenty team won the toss and elected to field, with the Coastland bowlers getting their side away to good start,  bowling good line and length in tandem.

Josh Healy-Ormrod, was the pick of the Bay sides bowling attack with three wickets for 32 runs, as Hamilton were bowled out for 166 in 66th over. Sean Wakelin and Iman Singh also bowled with genuine enthusiasm to take two wickets apiece.

The match was evenly poised at stumps on day one, with Coastland reaching 87 for the loss of four wickets. Josh Healy-Ormrod (50) Blair McKenzie (46) and Mikaere Leef (33) got amongst the runs on day two, to take the Bay of Plenty side through to 230 all out.

Hamilton declared at 155/9 in their second turn at bat, to set Coastland a target of 92 runs, for an outright victory. Josh Earle was the best of the Bay bowlers returning 3/17 with Sean Wakelin taking two wickets.

Coastland openers Sean Dykes (56no) and Andrew Randrup (36no) cruised to a ten wicket win in the twentieth over. The Coastland victory was particularly satisfying as the win reversed last year’s result where Hamilton easily defeated the Bay of Plenty representatives.

“While we knew we had a very talented side, the boys absorbed the demands of tournament week and deserved to win by putting pressure on the opposition teams throughout the tournament” said Coach Swan.

Bay of Plenty Lakeland, won the toss against Northland in the playoff for third place and made the decision to bat first, on a track first that looked to have plenty of runs in it. Opener Ryan Neves got the Bay side to a grand start belting 62 runs off 49 balls, with Dylan Macdonald continuing the momentum to be rewarded with 37 runs.

Coming in at five, Dilan Nanayakkara took control of his teams batting attack and was patience personified, as he top scored with 71 runs. The Lakeland representatives were finally dismissed for 246 in the 64th over, to set the team from the far north a big challenge to take first innings advantage.

While Northland got away to a good start, the Lakeland bowlers knuckled down to their work. Led by four wickets from Jared Meeling, Northland were in some trouble being 140 runs behind, with just three wickets in hand at stumps on day one, before being dismissed for 199 on day two.

A short and sharp Lakeland second innings saw them removed for 99, to set Northland a target of 146 to win. Jared Meeling grabbed another three wickets to take his tally in the match to seven, with the Northland batsmen getting home for victory with five wickets to spare, to take out third place in the five day competition.

Bay of Plenty Lakeland Coach Andrew Gibbs, can be well pleased with the performance of his side at the annual ND age-group competition. Dilan Nanayyakara and Ryan Neves finished in the tournament top ten batting stakes, while Jared Meeling’s seven wickets against Northland was one of the best bowling performances of the tournament.
