Coastland v Lakeland

The anticipated battle, between the two Bay of Plenty teams in the crossover semi-finals, at the ND Senior Secondary Cricket tournament being played in Gisborne this week (12/16 December 2016) came to fruition – with Bay of Plenty Coastland having to dig deep to defeat their Lakeland counterparts.

Lakeland won the toss and elected to bat and got through to 47 before their first wicket fell. Ryan Neeves was in top form cracking 41 runs off just 32 balls, with Chris Tupaea batting at four posting a solid 36. At 122/4, Lakeland were in a strong position however three quick wickets by the Coastland bowlers changed the momentum of the encounter.

Dylan MacDonald batting at nine, showed plenty of resistance posting an unbeaten 15 runs as Lakeland were bowled out for 165, setting their opponents a solid target. Mikaere Leef cleaned out the tail, taking four wickets for just nine runs, with Cam Riley finishing with figures of three wickets for 22 runs.

The Lakeland bowlers struck early, with the first wicket falling with just two runs on the board. The Coastland batting attack fought back, led by opener Sean Dykes who finished with a gritty half century. Blair McKenzie picked up the momentum to post 34, while Josh Healey-Ormrod took his team through to a hard fought five wicket win with 30 not out,. Sean Ingram and Ryan Neeves were the pick of the Lakeland bowling attack with two wickets apiece.

The result of the Bay of Plenty derby, means that Bay of Plenty Coastland will square off with archrivals Hamilton in the two-day championship final, with Bay of Plenty Lakeland meeting Northland in third and fourth place playoffs.

Coastland coach Peter Swan said “Lakeland gave us a solid workout in the semi-finals to prepare us for the battle against Hamilton”. “Hamilton beat us in last year’s final, with games between the two sides traditionally being hard fought encounters. We are looking forward to the challenge and it should be a great final”.
