BOP Coastland into Final

Bay of Plenty Coastland, swept into the ND Junior Secondary tournament Final being played in Whangerei this week (5/9 December 2016), with a six wicket over Counties Manukau in the semi-finals on day three.

Counties batted first and were bowled out for 127, with Fergus Lellman and Rhys Donaghy doing plenty of damage with the ball taking two wickets apiece. Coastland opener Taylor Bettleheim was patience personified anchoring his sides reply with 45 runs off 119 balls. Tim Pringle opened his shoulders and was rewarded with his sides top score of 57, as his team cruised to a six wicket victory. 

Bay of Plenty Lakeland, will play off for seventh and eighth place, after they were beaten by the ND Invitation XI in the semi-finals. Batting first, the Bay of Plenty representatives were removed for 103. Daniel Ford (37) and Bradley Rumble (23) made significant contributions with the bat.

The ND Invitation team, were made to work hard for a  five wicket win, with Ben Astwood and Maru Howell-Turnball bowling with enthusiasm to take two wickets apiece.  

Bay of Plenty Coastland, will meet hosts Northland for the second time in the tournament, in the 2016 ND Junior Secondary Championship Final, while Lakeland will play off for seventh and eighth place against Poverty Bay. The Finals playoffs are two day matches with two innings per side. 

On Tuesday, Bay of Plenty Coastland played their get out of jail card for the second time, when they got home in nail-biter against Northland. The home team batted first and were bowled out for 133, with James Gatenby-Hinton in grand touch with the ball returning 4/17 with Finn Dempsey taking three wickets. 

Coastland opening batsman Tim Pringle, led from the front as he belted his side top score of 49, with four 4’s and two 6’s in his time at the crease. However Northland made inroads into the Bay sides reply, and after Finn Dempsey went for 20, the Bay side still required 8 runs for victory. Braxton Fisher hit the winning runs of the last ball of the 49th over with Coastland sneaking home with a wicket to spare. 

Bay of Plenty Lakeland suffered a big loss on day two, after Waikato Valley posted 184 all out and then bowled the Bay of Plenty team out for just 46.

Waikato Valley 184 (Ben Astwood 5/17, Ryan Hall 2/29, Ronan van Niekerk 2/38) defeated Bay of Plenty Lakeland 46.
