T20 Results

There have been few tighter finishes at the ND Junior Secondary cricket tournament being played in Whangarei this week (4/9 December 2016), than the Bay of Plenty Coastland one run win over Waikato Valley, in the opening Twenty 20 clash on day one.

Bay of Plenty Coastland batted first and were restricted to 76/5, by some tight bowling, with Taylor Bettleheim top scoring for the Bay side with a hard fought 20 runs.

Waikato Valley got away to a good start and reached 24 before their first wicket fell. The Coastland bowlers then ripped into their work and had the opposition batsmen on the back foot, at five down for 35 runs.

A Waikato Valley sixth wicket fightback saw them back in the game, however the Coastland bowlers then struck back. At 69/9, the match was still on the line however the last Waikato region side wicket fell at the 75 run mark, to give Coastland a nail biting one run victory. James Gatenby-Hinton (2/7) Fergus Lellman (2/12) Rhys Donaghy (2/13) Tim Pringle (2/16) all bowled extremely economically, to finish with two wickets apiece

The Bay of Plenty Lakeland representatives, were batted out of the encounter with Northland, who posted 179/4 in their allotted twenty overs. Nathan McNeish was the best of the Lakeland bowling attack finishing with two wickets for 42 runs.

While Ashton Towers was a rock at one end and worked his way to 20 runs, lack of partnerships, cost the Bay of Plenty side who were removed for 71 to give the team from the far north a big win.

The afternoon T20, action saw Lakeland and Coastland go into head to head battle in a Bay of Plenty derby. Lakeland ware restricted to 80/9 by some tight Coastland bowling. Darcy Hoskin was the pick of the Coastland bowling attack taking three wickets for just 5 runs, with Finn Dempsey finishing with 2/9.

The Coastland victory was a walk in the park, with the win coming in the 14th over without the loss of a wicket. Tim Pringle blasted 46 off 54 balls with eight boundaries in his time at the crease. Fergus Lellman also played a big part in his teams ten wicket win with 22 runs.
