BOP Senior Men win against Hamilton

It doesn’t get much better than the Bay of Plenty senior men’s team victory over archrivals Hamilton, to take them into the final of the ND One-Day tournament, being played at Taupo this week (4/6 December 2016).

Bay of Plenty will play Counties Manukau in one-day action on Tuesday (6 December 2016) to decide the 2016 ND limited overs title. The Monday fifty over match-up was a classic Bay of Plenty verses Waikato City clash, with the Bay team chasing down the big Hamilton total of 255 all out.

Hamilton won the toss and elected to take first use of the wicket at Owen Delaney Park. The Waikato representatives got away to a good start and with two half centuries from their top order, were finally bowled out for 255. Alastair Blackett in his first season in the Bay of Plenty senior men’s side, bowled sensationally under pressure, to grab six Hamilton wickets for 35 runs.

With a place in the Brian Dunning Trophy title decider on the line, the Bay of Plenty batting line-up faced a big challenge to knock over their long-time rivals. Led by an unbeaten 118, from Bay of Plenty batting sensation Bharat Popli, the current Hawke Cup holders got home with four wickets to spare. Sean Davey also batted well under pressure for a gritty 25 runs.

Bharat Popli’s three figure score, was the Bay master blasters tenth century in Bay of Plenty colours, since making his debut against Hamilton in a Fergus Hickey Rosebowl encounter on the 6th December 2008.
While Bay of Plenty defeated Counties Manukau in T20 action on the opening day of this seasons Brian Dunning tournament, previous results count for nothing, with the clock wound back to zero in the tournament title decider.
