McDonalds Super Smash at the Bay Oval

McDonalds Super Smash this Sunday

The McDonalds Super Smash, which hits the Bay Oval at Mount Maunganui this Sunday (18 December 2016), is the first of a three games series starring the SKYCITY Northern Knights, during December 2016.

This Sunday’s match-up will see the Otago Volts pay a visit to the headquarters of Bay of Plenty Cricket, before the Auckland Aces come to play on Tuesday 27th December, with the Knights backing up two days later against the Canterbury Kings on Thursday 29th December.

The McDonalds Super Smash embraces the Twenty20 game, which is cricket’s entertaining ‘fast and furious’ format. Matches are completed in the space of three hours and players look to strut their stuff as quickly as they can. Players who can make an impact by hitting big and often to push the team’s total towards the stellar 200 mark, or by taking lots of wickets despite the aggression of such talented big hitters, put themselves in line for BLACKCAPS white ball selection.

A new holiday-friendly scheduling window, a fresh push towards family-oriented times and venues, and a change in sponsor – these are the main features of the revamped McDonald’s Super Smash.

The 2016-17 men’s domestic T20 competition will start in early December, be played in predominantly afternoon timeslots and will be staged in some of the country’s favourite holiday spots, including Central Otago, Nelson and Mount Maunganui.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White said the McDonald’s Super Smash was designed to capture the imagination and enthusiasm of kiwis as they approached and enjoyed the summer holiday season. “There has always been a ‘happy days’ element to this time of the year and we think it’s perfect for attracting New Zealanders of all demographics” said David White. “The twenty-over format is all about entertainment and having fun, and we have unashamedly built the competition around that.”

There will be plenty of local interest in the Knights side to play in the McDonalds three game series at the Bay Oval. Jono Boult, Joe Carter, Daniel Flynn, Tony Goodin, Brett Hampton and Bharat Popli are all graduates’ of the Bay of Plenty age-group pathway, while Dean Brownlie and Corey Anderson are BOPCA registered players.

There also a chance that some of the Northern Knights Black Caps, may turn out during the three McDonalds Super Smash home games.
