Two Centuries And A Dramatic Last Over Grab The Headlines In The Baywide Cup

Two centuries and a dramatic late afternoon last over, grabbed the headlines in the Baywide Cup played on Saturday (3 December 2016).

Element IMF Cadets regained the lead in the Baywide competition, after Morton Freer and Donavan Deeble blasted a 230 run partnership against Bayleys Central Indians at the Tauranga Domain.

Himesh Gosai had early success with the ball, taking three wickets to have the home side at 45 for the loss of three wickets. Morton Freer and Donovan Deeble then came together to put on a big partnership, that took their team through to 286/3. Freer who opened his sides innings finished with 104 not out with Deeble posting an unbeaten 151.

The Rotorua visitors went out to bat in a positive frame of mind, with Ben Sandford dispatching the first three balls to the boundary. However the urgency of the run chase saw the Cadets bowlers grab the momentum, with Central Indians three run outs not helping their cause. The side from the Sulphur City were bowled out for 90, with Ben Christensen returning 3/26 and James Birchall in his return to the Cadets ranks, taking two wickets.

Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys, fully utilized their 56 overs in the 56/50 competition game at Blake Park, being bowled out for 185, with three balls remaining in their turn at bat. Tim Clarke posted his teams highest score of 39 with Marcel Collett reaching 34 before being dismissed. Carrus Mount Maunganui part time bowler Peter Drysdale picked up three wickets for 27 runs.

The game went down to the wire, with Mount Maunganui needing just a handful of runs for victory in the last over, with seven wickets in hand. Enter Tauranga Boys bowler Sean Wakelin, who ripped out three Mount batsmen for a solitary run. Mount Maunganui were forced to concede a losing draw when they reached 183/6 in their fifty overs. Peter Drysdale was a rock at one end for the Mount, carrying his bat to an unbeaten 105. Drysdale's three figure score extended the Bay of Plenty skippers premier centuries to 10 for the Mount club.

Eves Realty Greerton leapfrogged New World Te Puke on the Baywide standings and took home the Western Bay challenge prize of the Baker Cup, when they won a battle of attrition at the Te Puke Domain.

Long-time Te Puke player Tai Bridgman-Raison reached 55 before being dismissed, with Gareth Wallace and Alex Gooding both getting into the thirties, as the hosts posted 212/7. Greerton leggie James Boyd was the best of the visitors bowling attack with three wickets.

Hard hitting Greerton batsman Cam Neal, was in top form smacking 94 not out, as his team reached their target with four wickets to spare. New Greerton recruit Josh Ormrod posted 27 runs, with Keaton Taylor the best of the Te Puke bowlers with two wickets for 18 runs.

With just two rounds reaming before the 2016 Baywide Cup title is decided, the first past the post championship, will be fought between Cadets, Mount Maunganui and Tauranga Boys College.
