Rain Again Plays Havoc With Baywide Cup

The inclement weather that has affected all but one round of the 2016 Baywide Cup continued on Saturday (10 December 2016) - with a short and sharp encounter that produced  result at the Te Puke Domain while the two other matches were  unable to be completed because of late afternoon rain.

New World Te Puke batted first, in the match-up with competition front-runners Element IMF Cadets at the Te Puke Domain, with batsmen coming and going in quick succession as the home side were bowled out for 73. Te Puke all-rounder Alex Gooding was a shining light at one end as he top scored with a hard fought 36.

Bay of Plenty representative Sean Davey did plenty of damage with the ball taking three wickets for 17 runs. James Birchall, in just his second outing for Cadets this season, grabbed two bowling scalps without conceding a run with Kamal Bains also taking two wickets.

The Tauranga visitors cruised to victory to cement their spot at the top of the Baywide Cup standings, with an eight wicket win. Sean Davey backed up his performance with the ball to finish with 35 runs to his name.

The Cadets win has set up a title decider next Saturday (17 December 2016) where Cadets and Mount Maunganui, who occupy the top two spots on the standings,  will go to battle for the right to lift the Baywide Cup aloft in victory.

With twenty points up for grabs and Cadets enjoying a 20 point lead, a Cadets winning draw, would be enough to take out the first past the post competition. Mount Maunganui must beat Cadets outright to take out the 2016 Baywide Cup and also ensure that they maintain a superior run rate.

In other matches, Bayleys Central Indians had the better of Carrus Mount Maunganui for most of the match-up, with three screaming catches playing a big part in dismissing the home side for 146. Central Indians were 53 without loss when further rain resulted in the game being abandoned.

Eves Realty Greerton and Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College were on and off the field at Pemberton Park, before the encounter was eventually called off, with Greerton at 149/1.
