Mt Maunganui Cadets battle it out for title

The Baywide Cup round-robin match at Blake Park between Element IMF Cadets and Carrus Mount Maunganui, has turned into a title decider, with the two Western Bay of Plenty teams occupying the top two spots on the points ladder.

The scenario is with Cadets enjoying a 20 point lead and twenty points up for grabs, a Cadets winning draw, would be enough to take out the first past the post competition. Mount Maunganui must beat Cadets outright to win the 2016 Baywide Cup and also ensure that they maintain a superior run rate.

Just three Western Bay of Plenty Clubs, have had their names engraved on the Baywide trophy since the competition began in 2007. Mount Maunganui have won the Baywide Cup on five occasions, with Cadets having emerged triumphant twice, while Greerton have won back to back titles in the last two seasons.

Both Mount Maunganui and Cadets will take strong line-ups into the battle at Blake Park on Saturday (17 December 2016). Cadets all-rounder Donovan Deeble, has blasted the seasons highest score of 151 not out and sits in second in the Baywide Cup battings stakes, with 250 runs. Morton Freer is another Cadets all-rounder to have a good season with the bat, posting over two hundred runs with a highest score of 104 not out.

Mount Maunganui batsman Blair McKenzie, is enjoying a busy week of cricket at the ND Senior Secondary tournament in Gisborne, before returning home to look to help his team to success in the Baywide Cup. McKenzie enjoys the rare distinction of having belted a century in both Baywide and Western Bay of Plenty Reserve Grade cricket this season. Long-time Mount player Peter Drysdale and Ben Musgrave are also match winners with the bat.

The leading bowler in the Baywide Cup title race is Mount Maunganui captain Dale Swan, with 16 bowling scalps and best figures of four wickets for 5 runs. Nick Smith is another Mount player to star with the ball in the Baywide Cup with 14 wickets.

Cadets are also well served in the bowling ranks, with Gurwinder Singh making his mark in his first season with the club, have best bowling figures of 5/20. Donovan Deeble, Morton Freer and Cadets stalwart Ben Christensen also give their side a number of options with the ball.

In other Baywide Cup round ten matches, Cooney Lees Morgan will host New World Te Puke at their temporary home field on Blake Park three, with Bayleys Central Indians at home to Eves Realty Greerton.
