A win and a loss

Bay of Plenty opened their Brian Dunning Trophy account, with a win and a loss on day one of the annual ND One-Day tournament being played in Taupo this week (4/6 December 2016).

In a change of format, two games of Twenty 20 opened the tournament between the Northern Districts Minor Association representative sides, with the Bay team squaring off with Counties Manukau and Northland on Sunday.

Counties took first use of the batting strip at Owen Delaney Park and posted 132/6. Sixteen year old Tauranga Boys College leggie Iman Singh, was the best of the Bay of Plenty bowling attack taking two wickets for just 11 runs.

Sean Davey batting at six, led the way to the Bay of Plenty victory (for the loss of five wickets) with a quick-fire 43 off just 26 balls. Opener Tom MacRury got the Bay side away to a good start with 36 runs before being dismissed.

In the afternoon round, Bay of Plenty faced off with Northland for the second time in eight days, after last weekend’s Fergus Hickey Rosebowl hit-out. The team from the far north won the toss and decided to bat first. Led by a hard fought 62 by Henry Cooper, Northland reached 135/5 in their allotted twenty overs. Bay of Plenty skipper Peter Drysdale was the best of the Bay bowlers finishing with two wickets at a cost of 17 runs.

Stephen Crossan took on a pinch-hitting role at the top of the order, to post 22 runs off 20 balls. Fellow opener Tom MacRury was also in good form top scoring with 26 runs, with Bay of Plenty in good shape after losing their first wicket at the 46 run mark.

At 90/4 the game was up for grabs, before the Northland bowlers slowed down the run chase to good effect. Needing 20 runs off the last over, Alastair Blackett lofted two mighty sixes, however the encounter finished, with Bay of Plenty falling three runs short. Bharat Popli and keeper Tim Clarke also made solid contributions with the bat getting into the twenties.

Day two is a must win situation, for the Bay of Plenty aspirations to make the final on the last days play on Tuesday. Standing in their way is long-time rivals Hamilton who also posted a win and a loss on day one.
