THREE YOUNGSTERS DEBUT FOR BAY OF PLENTY IN FERGUS HICKEY ROSEBOWL MATCH IN GISBORNE

Bay of Plenty Senior Men’s cricket team kick off a big huge representative season this weekend (12/13 November 2016) when they travel to Gisborne, to play Poverty Bay, in a two-day Fergus Hickey Rosebowl match.

The Bay of Plenty team were in superb form last season winning the two Northern Districts trophies of the Fergus Hickey Rosebowl and Brian Dunning (one-day) Trophy and adding the big NZ Cricket prize of the Hawke Cup in March.

The trip to Poverty Bay will give the Bay side the chance to grab the only cricket prize to slip from their grasp last season. The Rigden Shield is up for grabs each season in two-day games between the two North Island provinces.

In last season’s Rigden Shield clash at the Bay Oval, Poverty Bay batted first and posted a solid total of 270. The Bay of Plenty first innings reply fell short, when Bay of Plenty were removed for 195, with the visitors taking home the Rigden Shield courtesy of a first innings points advantage.

Since the first two second-class matches were played between the two “Bays” in 1945, Bay of Plenty have recorded 48 victories, Poverty Bay have won on 14 occasions, with four matches not producing a result.

Three young players will make their Bay of Plenty senior men’s team debut, after shining in early season cricket. Pace bowler Gurwinder Singh, in his first year out of Tauranga Boys College, took two wickets and contributed a handy 25 runs against Hawkes Bay in a pre-season representative hit-out during Labour weekend.

Tauranga Boys College leggie Iman Singh impressed the selectors in two Bay of Plenty Development team games in the last two weeks. Iman took two wickets against Counties and then backed up last weekend in the match-up with Northland returning figures of 3/39. Alastair Blackett, who attends secondary school in the Waikato, made his Bay Development debut last season and continued on with good form with both bat and ball against Hawkes Bay.

At the other end of the spectrum, four players to travel to Gisborne have played over fifty games apiece in the Bay of Plenty uniform. Peter Drysdale, who made his senior men’s team debut in the 2009/10 season leads the four with 68 caps, followed by Jono Boult who has made 66 Bay of Plenty appearances. Strike bowler Tony Goodin sits on 59 Bay games, while wicketkeeper Tim Clarke brought up his fiftieth game early last season and currently has 56 Bay caps to his name.
