BOP Team of the Year at BOP Sport Awards

Posted: Monday, 21 November 2016

The Bay of Plenty Senior Men’s representative team, beat of a strong field of contenders to win the TECT Team of the Year, at the 2016 Bay of Plenty Sports Awards.

Bay of Plenty, won all three Minor Association trophies that were on offer to the Bay of Plenty side during the 2015/16 season. The Bay of Plenty team won the Northern Districts One-Day (Brian Dunning Trophy) title with an undefeated record after beating Northland, Counties Manukau, Hamilton, Waikato Valley and Poverty Bay.

Solid two-day victories over Counties Manukau and archrivals Hamilton and a draw with Northland, gave Bay of Plenty the Northern Districts big prize of the Fergus Hickey Rosebowl by a wide margin.

The sole season stain of defeat came against Poverty Bay in a two-day encounter in the last game of the Northern Districts representative cricket year. However the first game of the 2016/17 season, saw the Rigden Shield returned to the Bay of Plenty Cricket trophy cabinet, when the Bay side beat Poverty Bay by an innings and 70 runs.

Saving the best for last, the Bay of Plenty representatives won the NZ Cricket Minor Association prize of the Hawke Cup when they defeated Hawkes Bay in a four innings thriller.

Bay of Plenty won the NZ Cricket Minor Association prize of the Hawke Cup, for the fifth time, after defeating Hawkes Bay in a Hawke Cup Direct Challenge at Nelson Park in Napier 11/13 March 2016. The Hawke Cup victory took the Bays Hawke Cup Direct Challenge record to 12 victories, from 28 challenges, since Bay of Plenty first challenged for the Hawke Cup in 1932.

A feature of the season was the number of different players that stepped up to win games during the ten matches, from November 2015 to March 2016. Bharat Popli scored a century apiece against Counties Manukau and Northland. Tim Clarke blasted his side to victory in a one-day match against Poverty Bay with 110 runs, while Ben Musgrave played a huge part in the Hawke Cup win smashing 102 in the fourth innings to propel Bay of Plenty to victory.

Much of the success of the side can be attributed to the Coaching and Management team, that was instrumental in planning and putting in place winning strategies, during the long ten-game representative campaign.

Debutant coach Graeme Aldridge, easily made the transition from first class player to the coaching ranks, with his vast knowledge of the game playing no small part in the team success.

Graeme was ably supported by Charles Williams and Wayne Brill in their respective assistant coach and team manager roles. Scorer Bill Anderson and Physio Roger Athy-Knibbs were also key components in the team success.
