Element IMFf Cadets Grab The Lead In The Baywide Cup

The battle between Bay of Plenty Baywide cricket and this seasons inclement weather continued on Saturday (19 November 2016), with all three Baywide Cup encounters being rain affected.

Element IMF Cadets grabbed the lead in the first past the post competition, courtesy of Mount Maunganui tasting defeat, with a winning draw against Eves Realty Greerton. Cadets set the home side a big target when they posted 251/6, with Northern Knight Jono Boult taking charge with bat top score with 88 runs. Sean Davey (40) and Donovan Deeble (37no) also made solid contributions.

Greerton were real trouble at the start of their turn at bat, losing their first three wickets with just 13 runs on the board. Brett Hampton and skipper Shane Wineti got the hosts back into the game with Hampton smacking 55 runs and Wineti posting an unbeaten 32. The light drizzle throughout the Greerton innings turned to rain, with the umpired pulling stumps with Greerton at 113/4.

Twenty wickets fell on a very green wicket at Smallbone Park in Rotorua, in the match-up between Bayleys Central Indians and Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College. The Tauranga Students batted first and were removed for just 89 with Sean Wakelin reaching 21 before being dismissed.

Central Indians innings, was just as dramatic as the visitors, as they were bowled out for 79 to give Tauranga Boys a 10 run victory. Andrew Gibbs, who is joint captain of the Rotorua side, fought hard for his team’s top tally of 21. Sean Wakelin backed up his sides top score with four wickets with Craig Baldry taking three wickets for just five runs.

The clash between competition leaders Carrus Mount Maunganui and New World Te Puke at the Te Puke Domain was another lowing scoring affair. Te Puke took first use of their home wicket and were bowled out for 122. Individual highlights were Gareth Wallace with 47 runs, with Tony Goodin taking five bowling scalps for the Mount and Dale Swan grabbing three wickets for just 8 runs.

A battle of attrition took place in the second innings with Mount Maunganui dismissed for 115, to hand the home side a narrow seven run win. Blair McKenzie was the best of the visitors batsmen with 30 runs, with Jonty Grigson, Brody Gilroy and Cam Riley taking two wickets apiece for the victors.

With four rounds remaining before the 2016 Baywide Cup title is decided, Cadets have taken the lead in the title race from Mount Maunganui, with Tauranga Boys College and Greerton lurking just off the pace in third equal position on the standings.
