Inclement Weather Plays Big Part In Two Baywide Cup Games

The Western Bay of Plenty inclement weather played a big part in two of the three Baywide Cup encounters on Saturday (12 November 2016) afternoon.

Eves Realty Greerton who are the defending Baywide Cup titleholders, roared back into contention when they easily defeated Bayleys Central Indians at Pemberton Park, with the game finishing without any weather delays.

The home side bowled first and quickly had the Rotorua visitors in trouble as they were demolished for 85. The Central Indians highest score of 19, by Ben Sandford, told the tale of the lack of partnerships Dan Spencer took four wickets with evergreen medium pacer Murray Jarvis returning 3/20.

Central Indians attack bowler Andrew Gibbs had some success with three top order wickets, however Greerton grabbed the win points on offer, with six wickets to spare. Cam Neal top scored with 23 with Dion McCall finishing with 22 runs to his name.

Intermittent showers at the Tauranga Domain, resulted in the match between Element IMF Cadets and Carrus Mount Maunganui, finishing in near dark conditions at the mandatory time of eight o’clock. The Mount bowlers had Cadets on the ropes at 5/35, however a solid partnership between skipper Scott Steward (50) and Donovan Deeble (39) steered the home side out of the disaster zone. Cadets were bowled out for 151, with Luke Tatley grabbing three wickets.

Late afternoon rain interrupted the Mount Maunganui reply. Battling fading light, the visitors worked hard to reach 142/5 when the mandatory finish time arrived, with the game finishing in a draw. Individual second innings honours belong to Blair McKenzie (49no) and Jason Luke (40retired) while Jamie Holden and Morton Freer took two wickets apiece for Cadets.

The encounter at the Te Puke Domain between New World Te Puke and Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College, also finished late in the day, with the final result also being a drawn game. Te Puke posted 176/6 with Tai Bridgman-Raison in grand touch top scoring with 86. Rhys Mischewski and Sean Wakelin did the majority of the damage with the ball for the Tauranga students.

Tauranga Boys reached 153 for the loss of eight wickets, when the umpires pulled stumps, with Ben Pomare top scoring with a gritty half century.
