Greerton And Tauranga Boys College Have A Chance To Narrow The Gap On The Competition Leaders

While Carrus Mount Maunganui and Element IMF Cadets lead the way in the Baywide Cup – Eves Realty Greerton and Cooney Lees Morgan Tauranga Boys College, who sit in third equal place on the standings, will have an opportunity to narrow the gap this Saturday (12 November 2016).

However the absence of the Bay of Plenty representative players in the Bay side to play Poverty Bay over the weekend, in five of the six contenders, throws an unknown factor into the weekends Baywide Cup round. Tauranga Boys and Greerton lose two players apiece to Fergus Hickey Rosebowl duty and will go to their WBOPCA Reserve Grade team for replacements.

Tauranga Boys College travel to the Te Puke Domain to play New World Te Puke. The Te Puke side, who are the reigning Williams Cup champions sit in fifth place and will be desperate for victory to move them up the table. Te Puke all-rounder Alex Gooding sits in third place in the Baywide Cup batting stakes, while quick bowler Christian MacDonald top scored for the Bay Development team in last weekend’s victory over Northland.

Tauranga Boys have plenty of young talent in their side, with Sean Wakelin and Tom Renouf in prominent positions on the Baywide Cup batting honours list. Rhys Mischewski and Josh Healy-Ormrod have made real impressions at the bowling crease this season and could make life difficult for the Te Puke batting line-up.

Greerton face bottom of the table Bayleys Central Indians at Greerton home base at Pemberton Park and will fancy their chances against the Rotorua visitors. However Central Indians have shown touches of class in the current Baywide Cup title race and could prove a thorn in the side of the home team.

Cam Neal and Greerton skipper Shane Wineti both put Fraser Street under attack the last time they played at home, with Jared Tutty in his first year with the club proving a revelation with the ball in hand. Central Indians bowler Andrew Gibbs can fire the ball down with plenty of venom, while Neeraj Kumar and Ben Sandford have shown good form with the bat in recent games.

The top of the table lash at the Tauranga Domain between Cadets and Mount Maunganui will have plenty of interest from local cricket watchers. However both sides have lost three players apiece to the Fergus Hickey encounter with the final result being hard to pick.
