Western Bay Of Plenty Colts Competition Kicks Off This Sunday

The outstanding success of the quick-fire WBOPCA Colts competition last season, has resulted in a Senior Secondary grade being added to last year’s Junior Secondary and Primary divisions this season.

The aim of the Colts competition, which will run over the next three weekends, is to align Primary, Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary players with four Western Bay of Plenty clubs. While some Saturday morning junior cricket sides play under the banner of local clubs, it has been recognised that the players lose their club connection, in the transition to the WBOPCA secondary schools competitions.

Western Bay of Plenty Senior Secondary (Year 11, 12 & 13) players will join their Primary (Year 7 & 8) Junior Secondary (Year 9 & 10) counterparts in three weekends of representative cricket action, that kicks off on Sunday 9th October 2016. The most promising Western Bay age-group players were invited to apply to Western Bay Cricket, to play under the umbrella of Otumoetai Cadets, Greerton, Mount Maunganui and Te Puke Clubs in the Colts competition.

A WBOPCA selection panel, allocated the teams based upon previous club ties and residential location, with the emphasis on selecting four well balanced teams apiece in the two grades.

The four clubs, have drawn on coaching expertise from within their ranks, with a solid range of current and former players to mentor the teams.

In other age-group cricket news, Takapuna Grammar School is bringing three teams to the Western Bay of Plenty for pre-season matches, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (6/8 October 2016) with all games being played at Gordon Spratt Reserve in Papamoa.

Takapuna Grammar First XI will meet a WBOPCA Invitation X1, their Girls XI will square off with a Bay of Plenty Secondary Schoolgirls side, while Takapuna Grammar Year Nine and Ten side play their Western Bay counterparts.
