Dean Brownlie

In this edition of Behind the Stumps we chat with Black Cap and Northern Knights batsman Dean Brownlie, who lives in the Western Bay of Plenty. Dean is registered to Mount Maunganui CC and played for them in the first two Baywide Cup games of the new season. He made his Bay of Plenty senior men’s team debut last season against Waikato Valley to earn player number 530.

Where were you born in Australia and where did you play junior cricket
I was born in the northern suburbs of Perth. I was the third of four boys, so like many others, my cricket first started in the back yard pretending to be our heroes.
What brought you to New Zealand to play cricket.
I felt that I was missing an opportunity in Perth so thought I would give New Zealand a shot.

What Major Association did you join on arrival and who did you play with
When I first moved over I headed to Christchurch, spent 3 months playing club cricket and then was lucky enough to get my first game for Canterbury in the T20 competition. For the next five years I played alongside players like Shane Bond, Chris Martin, Peter Fulton, Tom Latham and Mathew Henry.

Why did you move north to Northern Districts and then choose to like in the Western Bay of Plenty
It was definitely a tough decision to make, I loved my time at Canterbury but in that time I had holidayed in Mount Maunganui a couple of times and loved it. I felt the time was right to make a move and was grateful that Northern Districts felt I could be an acquisition.

What is the comradeship like with the Knights
It's been great, we have a great blend of youth and experience with a vast range of personalities.

When and where did you make your Black Cap debut
It was on Boxing Day 2010 in a T20 v Pakistan at Eden Park. It was quite a surreal feeling facing Shoaib Akhtar in my first Black Cap game.

Tell us about the best bowlers you have faced
Dale Steyn is someone who I have loved watching, so facing him and seeing how good he is in person, was a great experience. So many other great bowlers from James Anderson, Sunil Narine, Mitchell Starc and Shahid Afridi.

What has been your most satisfying achievement in cricket in New Zealand
Playing alongside some great cricketers and even better people.
